Major League Soccer (MLS) agrees to 10-year, $2.5 billion TV deal with Apple; MLS games will no longer be on local TV

Is this good for MLS?

The ratings for national games aren't great ... so let's keep those and take away local broadcasts from everyone. How does that make sense?
Well again I would imagine that most people watching local affiliates are already on streaming. It’s not like these games were playing on local ABC/Fox affiliates. “Local” is being overstated a bit here.

Needs a little context and nuance…….Every market is different but I don’t think access is being hampered as much as it appears.

"local" means deals teams had with regional cable networks similar to what NBA, NHL, and MLB teams have.

Instead of watching 30+ games on Bally Sports/NBC Sports/Spectrum + National TV games

Every game will be on Apple TV.

I don't think MLS really cares about folks having to pay for Apple TV in order to stream games. The average MLS viewer is likely middle class and not worried about paying 5 bucks a month for Apple TV plus. Just like they don't care about paying for Peacock or ESPN + to watch the top Euro leagues.

Plus it doesn't really sound like they're getting rid of local broadcasts. A win win for MLS. Hopefully they'll use the money towards bringing better talent into the league.

Correct and I would wager that people watching there are not terribly adverse to streaming. In some cases it may allow them to drop cable entirely. It could even bring some viewers in. In Atlanta a segment of the fan base doesn’t have cable and can’t view games locally without using someone’s subscription and they may already have Apple TV. Not saying that’s the case across the board but also don’t think it’s as easy as saying no local affiliates is a this massive viewership barrier.

You were flying high until the end. Most of the owners don’t have that ambition.

@K-Apps @Thavoiceofthevoiceless you guys are the sports media reports of The Coli, good deal or bad deal for MLS?

I think MLS was hoping for a bigger deal from an traditional TV media partner with streaming included but this isn’t a bad one for a monetary standpoint. The real question will this all streaming deal be a success. It was clear having games on RSNs wasn’t working for them as they even lower on the totem pole than the NHL, so having those games on streaming services makes sense. But, not to have a decent size linear TV presence idk that’s risky imo. NHL fans weren’t happy with the lack of linear regular season games on ESPN. I can’t imagine MLS fans will be thrilled with less games on ESPN and FOX

I mean on a international level this could be big since most of the world is Footies, but the States :patrice:
I mean let’s be reality MLS has been around for 25 years. This great watershed of support wasn’t going to come from the overall US population. Think they are going to convert pure casual ain’t wise. They know that.

Touche'. For what it's worth, I like the MLS but fukking hate their referees. Dudes are so obtuse it makes a toddler chewing on dirt covered ice seem more competent.

Why would euros wanna watch an inferior product to what they already have?

Its still football regardless of how terrible it is compared to Premier :francis: . No different from me watching Minor League baseball when MLB is a superior product. Its all in the thrill of the game and not so much the skill and etc. Plus, you can't go wrong with the theatrics of MLS:wow:

That account I posted is a convert. He became a little put off by where big money soccer is going and wanted something with a more even playing field. I’m not saying you are going to find a billion people like that but when you make it accessible globally then it adds up.
