I'm pretty sure I have mentioned this a few times before but this truly is a perfect film.
It still leaves me completely flabbergasted as to how they shot some of these stunts, and you still feel the change in your body when the film allows you to breathe for the first time after the first chase.
I also picked up yet another brilliance in its storytelling, which is the use of the sawed-off shotgun after the sandstorm. Besides being a callback to The Road Warrior, it allows to show how cold-blooded the main characters are without actually having them cross a line that could push them into unlikable. Max is willing to blow Nux' hand clean off to free himself from being chained to him, but it doesn't work because the shells are duds. He uses it to threaten the Wives and Furiosa, but the fact we know the gun is useless puts his threatening attitude in a lighter angle. Later when Furiosa overpowers Max and takes the gun from him she immediately pulls the trigger on him, establishing her willingness to kill without regard or hesitation
without making her come off as a cold killer at the same time. And the fact the gun is useless makes Furiosa realize that Max for what it's worth is not as ruthless as she thought one moment before.
In those five short minutes
the gun that doesn't work becomes a most effective storytelling tool to establish the basis of Furiosa and Max' uneasy alliance. Brilliant.
