I was just a lil boy listening to Lupe's stuff, it took me years to catch a lot of his bars
I'd also put Elzhi and Ka on that elite lyricist level.
Wasalu is just in a class by himself tho
Whos Ka?
Eh, I can't listen to super-lyrical stuff all the time. Sometimes I need some shyt I can vibe out to as well. But yeah, Lupe's writing ability is as elite as they come
Yeah I understand
But what I mean by Lupe's pen game is his method/style of lyricism some rappers should take some notes on.
For example his references which I definitely think rappers should pull up a seat and learn from Lupe. A thing or two at least
Most rappers use the same old references - Sports references , pop reference, pro black revolutionary reference, rinse and repeat
Lupes references range from all those and more including Manga/anime, books, comics, religions(outside of Christianity), art, etc
This might not seem like big of a deal to you. But it kinda is to me. I like lyricism.
And references are needed for comparison for your similes, metaphors, wordplay and so on. And it gets boring when rapper try to show their lyrical ability and it always results in
- reference to MJ
- Reference to PAC, big, Nas or Jay, etc
-reference to some boxer
And whoever dominated in a sport or music
shyt gets boring. Would really appreciate if rappers expanded their knowledge (and their vocabulary)
I understand why rappers in the 90s had to cause we had no net. But with the net and the instant info we have access to. Cmon guys smarten up
i was fanboying and just talking shyt. but it would be nice if supposed "lyricist" would expand a little more
