Luger beating Hoegan for the belt in 97 seemed so epic at the time

The Lex Express angle seemed so force and you could tell Luger's heart was not into it which is why it was a failure.

But the WCW version of Luger?
The Total Package/Sexy Lexy shyt?

He was over like a motherfuker

A big part of my wrestling childhood and in my top 10 for sure.
"In his hand was a Ruger, dipped in a Lex like Luger":takedat:

Theres a reason why countless lyrics are about Lex Luger. :wow:

So the reason the Starrcade outcome happened like it did was because sting had become out of shape, unmotivated and possibly pilled up?

Bischoff subtly said that the tanning reason was bullshyt on his podcast and hinted that Sting was drinking or doing drugs heavy at the time. Which makes sense, why would a guy with white face paint who hides in the shadows and rafters go to the beach or a tanning bed?

There was a Luger interview I watched where he said found out he was winning right before he went through the curtain. Eric wanted to pop a rating in that city.

Always felt like Luger gets too much hate in hindsight. No he was never going to be on Hogan/Austin level but overall he had a solid run with some dope moments like this. The torture rack was one of those things that people who didn’t really follow wrestling even knew about in the 90s.

Amazing how over Luger was during that run with really no gimmick. They basically just always had him win on TV. One of my most distinct memories of any Nitro from 1996 or 1997 was Luger beating someone lower card or even jobber with a name type (Mike Enos, Greg Valentine, Jim Powers, Ray Traylor, Barbarian, etc) and always winning with his finisher.

Pretty simple formula. Have a guy look like a winner constantly and fans seem him as such.

Yeah the rack was super over as a finisher. Used to have the crowd on their feet. If Luger had someone in the rack you know they were either tapping or their would be outside interference. Nobody was bearing it like any of the leglock submissions.

People seem to say Luger was an underachiever, but he had a damn good career. They just remember his WWE face push that didn’t really connect the way they wanted.

wcw was never "great" at making the story they wanted to tell clear in my opinion. With Luger during this period, there was a really good story there, just they didn't hype it enough. thats where vince used to shine.

going back to war games 96, where Luger is the one to submit and cost wcw the win vs the nwo, he was at his low point. from there they had him basically on a redemption tour on nitro. racking everyone. at one point he would rack a 300 lb guy one week, then 400 lb another, then there was once a guy like 500 lbs. it took him THREE tries to get him up, the crowd was into it every try. Luger was SUPER over in 1997.

But yes, simple formula definitely worked in this case. win, go over strong with your finish.

I thought they did.
War Games 96- August 97, Luger was practically the top face on the roster.
You have him losing War Games, Sting walks out, having to go face Arn who blames him, Giant turns on NWO and nobody trusts him until Luger says he does, they win the titles only to get fukked over, Luger once again has to face the whole NWO in Uncensored (Sting comes byke though. :banderas:), wins a four corners match against his partner giving him that 1 on 1 with Hogan, Hogan ducks him and starts to try and get in his head with Rodman, Luger makes HOGAN tap out clean in a tag match, even though Rodman was the other guy in it, and from there you get to August.

The whole point was that Luger blamed himself for Sting walking out and then took a stance against NWO above anyone else. Macho got jumped a million times until he just joined. Luger was taking those beatings and kept coming back. When Giant turned on NWO, it showed growth because Luger knew that he already fukked Sting over by judging.
Then, the rest is just classic, heel running like a bytch while Luger has to wait on his shot. When it came down to it, this was like a 11-month story line. The only unfortunate thing is that they clearly had nothing for Luger even though he was objectively the biggest face after Sting. Yeah, even bigger than Flair at the time.
