WHAT REALLY GOOD WITH THIS ONE PIECE STUFF? WHAT'S THIS shyt EVEN ABOUT? IS IT GOOD FROM THE START OR SHOULD I START AT A CERTAIN POINT?
One Piece is basically a shonen manga that works in a similar fashion to early Dragonball. Essentially, heavy emphasis on action, exploration and humor. The story starts out showing that the world is filled with pirates and that many years before the current story timeline a man named Gold Roger was the King of Pirates. He was caught and executed. Before he was killed he proclaimed that he left some treasure and dares everyone to find "One Piece". This sets off a golden age of pirates who are determined to find One Piece.
The main character is Monkey D. Luffy. His dream his to find One Piece and become the next Pirate King. He winds up eating something called a "Devil Fruit" by mistake which gives him a rubber body (think Mr. Fantastic). Devil Fruits are able to give you super powers, some rarer and offer more powerful abilities than others, but if you eat one you will become paralyzed if you're ever submerged in water. He eventually sails from home to recruit crew members. Along the way we (the audience) see more of the world as Luffy and his crew travel the world, see the powerful pirates who hold significance, the Marines who are the main lawful force who combat the pirates, the World Government who somehow controls everything (including the Marines) and sinister undertones of how they came to power, glimpses of factions who oppose the World Government, and glimpses of the significance of the middle initial "D" that Luffy and other characters hold.
Where should you start? I would say start at the beginning regardless but you should keep in mind a couple of things:
-The first 70 something chapters focus on Luffy recruiting crew members. It's still good but the meat of the interesting plot doesn't happen until after. I wouldn't skip all this though since the series does a lot of call backs and characters Luffy and his crew met early on become somewhat prominent. There's also a lot of development that happens between the crew.
-The art style may be considered wacky or "childish" by some. This series has a lot of over-exaggerated premises, from the powers, humor, expressions, outbursts of anger or sadness, character design, to the world itself. It's pretty basic but also gets a lot better later on when it comes to environment. And although it's generally light-hearted there are plenty of serious and fairly mature moments.
-It's long. There are more than 600 chapters and still only halfway done
-The story will always revolve around Luffy and his crew. The world itself, as interesting as it is, is secondary to them and only comes to prominence when it pertains to the crew. So basically, if you like the crew and the environments they travel to, you will immensely enjoy this. If you're more of a fan of the world and other characters yet don't like the crew it will be struggle to get through this.
Hopefully this will help some.
