Lucas Matthysse Eyes February 28 Return, WBO Title
Posted by: Elisinio Castillo on 1/2/2015

By Elisinio Castillo

Junior welterweight contender Lucas 'The Machine' Matthysse (36-3, 34KOs) has a working return date of February 28th. The opponent is unknown, but the Argentine fighter is looking to get his hands on the vacant WBO championship.

Matthysse was in action twice in 2014. He stopped John Molina in April in a 'Fight of The Year' candidate. He was down twice in the contest and came back to drop Molina three times for a stoppage win.

Matthysse is the number one ranked contender to the WBO title. The belt became vacant when Chris Algieri moved up to challenge Manny Pacquiao for the WBO title at 147-pounds. Algieri is the number two ranked contender.

"I have date of February 28, with two or three opponents [being discussed]. The WBO super lightweight title is vacant at 140 pounds. I'm number one so right now we are waiting for confirmation on the opponent, the location and the date," Matthysse told Fox Deportes.

Well, being that About BIllions is fighting on March 7th...Matthysse is obviously not fighting him:manny:

He said he's looking at 2 or 3 opponents to fight for the vacant WBO Championship?:patrice:

The #1, #2, #3, and #4 ranked WBO Junior Welterweights are Chris Algieri, Lucas Matthysse, Ruslan Provodnikov, and Jason Pagara....in that order (:mjpls:)

I'll be expecting either Algieri or Provodnikov for him on Feb 28th if Al Haymon plans to "right his wrongs" for 2015 in the eyes of the hardcore Boxing fan:ufdup:

Lucas beats Algieri and then we get a Lucas/Manny fight in 2015.
I would be more interested in that fight than Manny/Floyd to be honest.

Im guessing this means we can look forward to AB fighting Zab or Soto to stay busy until Danny's belts are up for grabs by Spring

One thing I can't figure out now is...
With Lucas going after the WBO
AB with the Green Belt
Who on Haymons stable would be in line for the WBA tho??

I doubt we ever get AB vs Matthysse now :stopitslime:

AB is the highest ranked Haymon fighter in the WBA (ranked #3 challenger behind Jessie Vargas who's the WBA "Regular Champion", Mauricio Herrera who's the WBA "Interim" Champion/ranked #1 challenger, and Thomas Dulorme who's ranked #2 challenger)

Agreed but I'm not missing the guaranteed fukkery that is May vs Pac. Too much build up over the years.
I would pay the PPV price to watch the Pac/Floyd fight but it is not a fight I would anticipate to be all that entertaining for the 12 rounds it lasts.
Pac/Lucas would be far more fun to watch.

Lucas vs Broner still possible but Haymon ain't risking it. He should gamble and let it fly as a win over Lucas by AB would be a very good look.

Before I heard this there were two other options, Algieri was stripped of his belt for the Pacquiao fight so he was going to petition to be a mandatory, also if Crawford vacates he has first right to be a mandatory, so there could be several options.

Crawford vs. Matthysse would be interesting.
Prov. vs. Matthysse though is just pure :ohlawd:. Neither guy would run in that fight and with the way they hit I don't think it lasts 12.

Matthysse not concerned with Broner: @Newzz , your thoughts :mjpls:

Back in September, junior welterweights Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34KOs) and Adrien Broner (29-1, 22KOs) were featured in separate Showtime televised fights from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After Broner won his main event over Emmanuel Taylor, he called for a fight with Matthysse. Viewers believed the two boxers were placed on the card to promote a possible future meeting.
Besides Broner calling him out on television, Matthysse has not heard anything regarding the fight.
The continued silence on facing Broner is no problem for Matthysse, who if more focused on winning a world title at 140-pounds. Matthysse, ranked in the number one position under the WBO and also holder of the WBC silver title, wants to get a title shot on a tentative return date of February 28th.
"Broner talked about [a fight with me] on the day that we fought on the same card [and there has been nothing since then]. He is not a defending champion...he has nothing...it would just be a fight where you are taking risks for nothing more than getting your hand raised as the winner," Matthysse said.
