So I didn't take undergrad as...I don't want to say seriously because I was working hard, but I wasn't working smart. Finished with a 2.3 cumulative GPA from engineering at a Big 10 school.

In the next couple of years, I plan on taking the steps needed to prepare for applications. Taking the GMAT, applying to as many schools as I can stand, etc etc. I'll also be working on running an internet marketing startup at the same time. I think a masters in business would go nicely with being an internet entrepreneur.

However my gpa is straight larry holmes...I have a feeling not many schools are gonna peep me serious...

What can I do to increase my chances of getting into a good school?

I know some people who had a Larry Holmes gpa. They enrolled as a non degree seeking graduate student, basically anyone can enroll so long as you have a bachelors. The took a few graduate level courses, then enrolled into the program they wanted to. Then also got good gre/GMAT scores. The most important thing for you is to do as well as you can on the GMAT, get some good references, then in your application explain why your gpa isnt so hot and how it's not your full potential. Explain how you had to work full time etc.

What are your goals? If you're going because you need a structured environment to learn advanced business principles and you think your startup will benefit, do the MBA. If you're doing it to have it on your resume, forget it and focus all your energy on growing your startup.

i dont know about engineering but with IT companies if you're not at 3.7 and above they're not trying to hear it.

In that case, don't think it's worth it, unless you get a full scholarship.

I had 3 undergrad degrees with a 3.8 GPA. Finished my MBA with a 3.9 GPA. Helped land me a great government job, but I hated it, so made plans to exit. My wife stayed at home at the time. She just has a high school degree. Her mom is a local big shot in her industry. She got my wife a job in days, while I constantly applied to places and was rejected for months. My wife now makes much more than I did at my government job in one year's time. I started my own business, which takes extreme dedication if you want it to grow and succeed. My MBA helped advance my knowledge, which is helping my company, but it did basically nothing for the stable 9-5 route.

It's who you know.

My ex-business partner also had a low undergrad GPA. He got into Louisville and finished the MBA program there with a low GPA. He makes a lot of money in sales. He's a pure bullshytter.

It's also how great you are as a social bullshytter.

And if those two don't apply, I've seen people surpass me in terms of stable 9-5 career progression who simply started out at a place and moved their way up over time.

I really don't think MBAs are helpful, until you've been working somewhere for years and you're being considered for a promotion, and all things considered, the MBA is the one leg up you have.

Like Good Will Hunting... much cheaper to just go to the library if your sole purpose is knowledge and you don't need a structured environment.

If your MBA isn't from a top 15 school than its worthless. Only top tier MBA's will get you anywhere. Anything else is just to pad your resume. You'll get a one up on the next guy who only has his bachelors but its really not all its cracked up to be unless its from a top tier school.

Co-sign. I completed my MBA but I am using the knowledge for my small business. I am still working a day job that pays me well, but ultimately I plan on being on my own full-time. The story about your wife making more money with less education is all too common. I live in Houston and there are many people making good money down here with no degrees because they are connected.

Why didn't you get your wife's mom to give you the hook up as well? :wtf:

i suggest you go get serious work experience in sales or retail or some other business type job that is results oriented and high on meritocracy. once on the job, you will see if MBAs helped any of your superiors, also, real experience with results you can prove might improve your chances of getting accepted into a decent MBA program

The general consensus is that an MBA is useless unless you have worked first. At a top tier program, you do more networking than actual work at an MBA program.
