20-year-old Sharmeka Moffitt remains in critical condition in the ICU at LSU Medical Center after being set on fire at Civitan Park in Winnsboro, Louisiana on Sunday evening.

Sharmeka's mother, Edna Moffitt says 60% of her daughter's body was burned in the attack. "Both of her arms, and they are third degree burns, down her chest and legs - one. Basically her arms are real bad."

Police say around 8 p.m. on Sunday Moffitt called 911 telling them she had been attacked and burned by three men in white hoodies. They say she was unable to identify her attackers. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirms that "KKK" was spray-painted on the hood of her car, with a racial slur underneath.

"This is a horrific event for our community," says Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb. "It makes everyone uneasy. It is our hope that everyone stands together at this time, and follow the information that is gathered, follow the facts, follow the evidence and hopefully that will lead us to justice in this case." He went on to tell KSLA News 12 that they have no information to lead them directly to any individual suspects at this point, but he says they are following all avenues.

A candlelight vigil has also been for Moffitt for Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Civitan Park.

It was probably individuals or a small group of white supremacists rather than the official KKK, which is so decentralized at this point that it's hard to consider them a larger-scale actor in any sense. The actual KKK is still everywhere, though, even though it is decentralized. There are still some here in NY (though not in the city, of course.)

yeah actually the reason I said it's hard to believe is it just sounds so odd... I'm thinking the attackers might not be racially motivated at all and the spray paint could be misdirection

The modern KKK is a group of loosely connected, tiny groups. It would be the same as attributing a modern murder where someone wrote Bloods at the crime scene to the Bloods as a whole. Even if those people call themselves Bloods, the fact is that there is no national network of Bloods anymore, and so it could just as easily have been an isolated group of individuals appropriating the name, which people do with the KKK all the time now because the name is still known even though the organization barely exists anymore.

Still, none of what I'm saying apologizes for or defends the KKK.
