Vlad's explanation on why its not important to have listened to past music within the genre really roots-out what is driving his position in the debate that he is having with Jamar. Before he expressed his rational, I wrongly assumed he was going to say something like, "Listening to certain music from the past is not a necessary requirement to make music that ppl will like", which is completely fine and valid, however, his logic had to do with the idea that listening to past music will just constrain an artist creatively and that stagnates progress which is ultimately bad.

I found this response to be absurd and obviously unsupported by the history of the genre and music as a whole, which is probably why Vlad couldn't give any hard evidence to back up his claim (I wish Jamar asked him to name names on this point instead of going on a tangent about samples, since the burden on proof was on vlad, not him). Anyway, So then I asked myself, if there is no hard evidence that could lead him to such a stance, why is he making that assertion? I'm left to conclude that his entire position is about his ego.

Vlad wants to be perceived by others as someone who is forward thinking and progressive when it comes to hip-hop because it makes himself feel good and it allows himself to act superior to ppl who have preferences like Lord Jamar. And towards the end of the video you can see that Jamar realizes that's all vlad has behind his argument, which is why he states that he doesn't care how his preferences make him look to the audience who likes Yatchy and etc, because unlike vlad, his preferences are not derived from his self-esteem, its derived from his past life experiences which was the catalyst that developed his music taste over the course of his entire life.

You shouldnt be allowed to be apart of or enjoy the successes of hiphop if you dont love it....its not a matter of "studying" the past,you shouldnt have to study because you should already be informed,because you shouldve already been listening to the music and "studying" the history....lil yachty seems to have no knowledge and rejects it all....pretty sure hes playing the same game as vlad is though....Vlad knskws alotve people tune in because they hate him and his garbage opinions....is he playing devils advocate or just devil?he falls into devil category anyway based on his other style of interviews wjere he tryin to get nikkas caught up.

That last point Jamar made is too real... there's a lot of MFs who are so hell-bent on showing they can still be cool that they feel obligated to like some shyt because other people do. I tell people all the time, I'm not that guy you can age-shame into likin' wack shyt. I'll still listen to a Pete Rock & CL Smooth album I've heard 113 times before I waste a half-hour of my life listening to a Desiigner mixtape. And that doesn't mean I dont like *anything* new, but Xanax-induced rap ain't my thing and it never will be. I play music I hate ALL THE TIME bcause other people happen to like it, but that in no way means I have to... I only like it when it gets me paid.
