At the forefront of the 25 of 32 teams experiencing a decline in ratings are two of the league’s primetime darlings, who share a stadium—the New York Jets and Giants. While the Jets are coming off a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football, their fans aren’t going out of their way to watch Gang Green, losers of five straight entering Thursday when they aren’t on primetime.

In fact, according to Puck’s John Ourand, the Jets represent the biggest drop in local ratings in the AFC, down 32 percent from a season above. It appears that another losing season has caused one of the more passionate fanbases in the NFL to grow apathetic. And after Week 9, the Jets are only on primetime one more time—Week 11, Sunday Night Football vs. the Indianapolis Colts—so unless they turn their 3-6 season around, those numbers seem likely to continue to be unimpressive.

The same goes for the New York Football Giants, who have seen their local ratings down 33 percent.

You have to wonder how much the New York Mets and Yankees having long October playoff runs have contributed to this, but perhaps people in the local New York/New Jersey market are no longer going out of their way on Sundays to watch Daniel Jones and a soon-to-be 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers. And who could blame them?

On the opposite coast, the story in Los Angeles is a curious one.

The Chargers, riding a winning record (4-3) under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, have seen local TV ratings fall by 25 percent. Meanwhile, the Rams, sitting at 3-4, have faced a more modest seven percent decline, though their fan base still seems less than enthused.

Elsewhere, traditionally strong markets are showing signs of wear.

In Boston, the Patriots’ struggling season has driven local viewership down by 25 percent. Despite hopes pinned on the Browns, Cleveland fans are tuning out, with ratings off by 20 percent.

But it’s not all gloom for the league. Some cities are surging.

Houston has seen the league’s biggest spike in viewership, up an impressive 36 percent. In the NFC, the Detroit Lions’ loyal fanbase is rallying, too, with the 6-1 Lions bringing a 10 percent increase in local ratings.

All in all, the NFL’s national ratings may paint a different picture, but the local numbers shared by Ourand reveal a far more nuanced landscape. For every city hyped over a fresh start or a winning season, there are others where apathy seems to be taking root, even in football-obsessed markets.

Winning cures all, and perhaps that’s the path to a solution in markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. But that’s easier said than done, and it’s not as simple as just putting games on the schedule.

Jets and Giants are definition of basura:scust:

Pats? :mjlol:

Surprised Chargers declined that much, with Harbaugh in this year:ehh:

Houston/Detroit have squads (moreau Detroit) :manny:
People thought the jets were gonna be good though. They are ass now but we didn’t know that at the start.

I still watch every weekend but the NFL has a BAD product right now. There is the occasional good game but those are few and far between.

You see it

NFL has a quality of play problem but people continue to put their heads in the sand.

Professional sports at large is garbage at this point in time.

TYRONE GA!
league has overvalued average QBs essentially giving them nba type max deals which hurt their ability to have a more complete team. No one wants to pay and watch trash

And with the Pats, Jets, Giants being ass in huge markets of course it’s gonna suck. Chargers are solid but not exciting right now. That’s four off top right there

My Pops Forever RIP
1. The teams are ass. LA had the Dodgers, this year Boston had the Celtics. NY had the Liberty, but they also had BOTH baseball teams play deep into the postseason.

2, for clarification, are these ratings just for when their local teams are on or in general? If it's in general, that leads to my next point.

3. No matter how much these sports talk radio shows want it to be otherwise, when baseball and basketball are good here-- not just the Knicks, the Liberty were a bigger deal than people wanna admit, football doesn't stand a chance. With some teams when they're ass you can pivot to talking about tanking or tryna figure out who in college will be the guy you want, but since NY doesn't give a damn about college football, you can't even really pivot to that... and that's if it's just local. Now, yes, Yankees and Mets were in the playoffs and would go up against football and win, but that's not normal in America.

If it's national, a big reason for the drop is NY has gotten a lot of prime time matchups that we don't care for. Every other matchup feels like the Chiefs are involved and they've kinda become the Spurs: they win but it's boring, and even worse, predictable. Mahomes wins games with 220 yards and 2 picks. Kelce damn near washed with 3 catches for 32 yards and we'd rather talk about his pod and his girl. We're so desperate for them to be exciting we're pretending DeAndre Hopkins is still great. In a league where every win is supposed to matter and any given Sunday and all that, the Chiefs are earmarked into the AFC title game and the Jets and Giants are guaranteed to miss the playoffs (for the Jets they have the longest playoff drought in SPORTS).

Yep. It used to be you could have a pretty mid squad, mid QB, and go 7-9 with relevant games through week 13 at least.

How could you achieve this witch craft? Generally by investing in the run game. NFL defenders play a lot harder in a close game and an effective run game keeps things close.

Barkley getting paid $11m for three years. The Giants beat Washington this weekend with Barkley.

Another team if they wanted to be competitive for the wild card could probably sign two good backs on short deals for 6m each.

But they dont wanna be successful though. They want to tank.

The Chiefs are boring because of the referee favoritism.

Take that away, they lose a few more games and its compelling again.

Nah, the rest of the league is just as boring.

Awful QB play and you have colleges and league coaching staffs passing the buck that it is not their job to develop QBs. Extra games, less practice time ... every game is close because every team is shyt. There's no reason to tune in unless you are a gambling addict.
