Self defense in this case is an affirmative defense. He doesn't have to prove he acted in self defense, but only leave a reasonable doubt. The burden of proof that it wasn't self defense is on the prosecution. No research needed.

Don't play games. Creating reasonable doubt that he didn't instigate a fight and then kill Trayvon Martin is a burden that Zimmerman hasn't reached imo(I understand that his team has yet to make his case yet though). If you knew that he had any burden whatsoever to prove his self defense claim you wouldn't have said or implied that only the prosecution had a burden.
