Yea and it really is the biggest disappointment to me...we're talking about a global interconnected system where poor/working class peoples have the ability to communicate...think about that report where it said there are more cell phones than toilets available in the world today; although it is sad to say that, the availability of this powerful tool can still be utilized, but it will take complex and difficult steps to break this; so much of the internet and social media is built of consumerism and capitalism that its pretty much intertwined with social media...as blacks in America and across the world, our diaspora has the communicative ability to really blast oppression and mobilize. I think once the new social media giants come along, if they stay out the hands of the private corps (which would be difficult), then it they can be used to promote counterhegemony. thats another conversation though; we gotta work on right now with these twitters and instagrams now
Another reason why its damn near impossible is the herd mentality. It has gotten to the point where if you don't have a facebook/instagram/twitter you HAVE to be one of the following:

  1. boring
  2. arrogant
  3. pretentious
  4. hater
  5. antisocial!!!!! (Not having an instagram is likened to being Richie Ramirez!!)
One can't even speak negatively about these social networks without being insulted. shyt is real

It is values. That boy, valued image more than his moms life. People are valuing attention more than life and self respect.

It has been getting worse as years pass, but social media has given us more access and a venue for attention whores. People use to do things for attention all the time but instead of being known in your neighborhood or school, people trying to go global. A self absorbed society. People want validation wonder where they aren't getting it from where they run to strangers :mjpls:
People will be at a basketball game, concert or club with bottles taking pictures , or zooming in to make it seem like they're courtside. What happened to just enjoying the moment? Why does everything have to be documented :what:. ?

Breh, you don't think I'm tryna eat off this social media money? I have an idea that is useful, attention whore proof in the infancy stages. It's just a shame I dont have the computer/software programming skills. If I dont land a job out of school in the first six months though I'm making it a reality. Two ideas actually but one would have to cut in Live Nation/Music labels . My closest friends are on board we gon get this money :mjpls:

Hi my name is Joey :shaq:

Thinking about it, I really think social media has people is so many words, self medicating their insecurities. You don't feel important? Get some followers. You don't feel attractive? show your butt and get some likes. You were popular in high school? You can be that person again on twitter/instagram. Instead of just dealing with issues and living life people are running to social media.

People can't see whats in front of them, for a camera in their face.

Edit:

It all really stems from the celebrity worship, imo. Social media is just the outlet to express that but our society's intense fascination with the lives of the rich/famous is the underlying issue. People want to live the life they see on tv/movies. Idol worship is at an all time high and it's scary.

Agreed. All while trying to make their own reality as close to "celebrity/rich/exciting" as the real celebs. Then the sheep all try to keep up with the joneses.

This is the problem with this "look at me now" generation and their need to feel accepted by the masses, or constantly showered with attention. "Likes" has turned a whole generation into zombies. Its a legit problem. People no longer enjoy themselves for themselves. They don't even enjoy themselves amongst their real life friends. Their sole purpose for doing stuff is to garner attention from people whom in most cases they don't even know.

social media has given most losers a second life, in real life depressed, no friends, in their neck in debt.

On social media, club pictures, vacation pictures tickets bought their ccs, 2,000 followers and showing all their purchases like life is good.

Everyone wants to keep up with the "joneses".

I know this girl, has a kid like 3,000 followers on instagram, every day posting pictures of herself, food she is cooking, out at the clubs, "friend's writing they love her and ish"

but in real life depressed on paxil, struggling to make rent and buy food, can't even look after her kid that the majority of the time she's at her grandmas or dad, and has no real friends.

Social media is basically that second life computer game
