This may be a lengthy post, so bare with me.
This is open to subjectivity, but Beyoncé is this generation's Janet Jackson. Now, is she better than Janet? Vocally, yes. As a performer? Ummm, not so sure.... Song catalouge? Janet>>>>>>>
As good as Beyoncé is, her music cannot compete with the genius of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. That isn't Beyoncé's fault. The times and the audience she caters to is a lot different than when she was growing up, ironically, listening to Janet. Yet, Beyonce is last woman standing or a cut above her peers. If you compare Bey to Janet(which most of do), then she may be average (or mediocre to some), but for this epoch, she's the best (IMO).
As far as tiers are concerned, she is ranked among the best in my performers tier. Here's how my tiers are set up:
- GAWD(Singer/Writer/Producer/Performer.... they can do it all or the majority and has the longevity)
- Great(Good/Great singers that are good at performing, but they're missing something. They can't be in the GAWD Tier... to be fair, most black artists are in this tier)
- Good(Respectable artists that don't have the longevity and/or catalouge of the GAWD or Great Tier. Generally don't write their own music and/nor they aren't great peformers neither)
Then you have your mediocre and terrible, which I won't bother explaining.
It still would be difficult to rate because different people value different things from their artists, like for example.... Is a dancing performer like Beyonce & Usher better than a performer like Alicia Keys?
In my opinion, Beyonce is in the "Great" tier.
