Companies love removing things that ppl love, its like when a social media app changes a feature for no reason.
When it comes to popular apps it’s NEVER for no reason (I work in tech and worked on one of the world’s biggest apps)
The 2 most typical reasons why ‘unpopular’ features get pushed through:
1. They want to increase the ARPPU (Average Revenue Per Paying User) -if it’s a game with in-apps) OR they want to increase Retention (how often a player comes back to the app in a set team eg how many days per week) in a completely free app like Snapchat, mainly to make money off of advertisements AND they believe (they = product leadership so the Producers, Executive Producer + stskeholders like top management) that the suggested changes would have this effect. NORMALLY big changes or new features are A/B tested, a small group sees the new things and they look at ARPPU or RETENTION and compare the group that does have it vs the group that does not and decide to a) launch it worldwide b) improve it c) kill it
2. A lot of unpopular features/changes may be unpopular to non-paying players or players who very casually use apps, bit data has proven that the small but key group of paying players react good to it (higher spend). Also: frustration isn’t always a bad thing ESPECIALLY when there’s the option of paying to remove that frustriation.
This said: companies have data and data doesn’t lie (even though it can be interpreted in different ways and ccontext is crucial)... however stubborn Product Leaders with influence can ruin apps by pushing their idea/feature even if there is huge community backlash. This is usually a bad sign for that app’s and company’s future... Snapchat rolled out an uodate people hated it and Kylie Jenner tweeted about how she didn’t like it which really hurt the company. They should’ve simply reverted their update and tweeted ‘we tried something new but we hear you guys.. the OLD Snapchat is back!’ They didn’t, thet were stubborn and Snapchat’s popularity, usage and relevance are all down. It’s not game over - but it just takes one new app to change that
About the new logo: looks ok for everything except the ASG and Finals.. looks like some Executive Product Leader had an idea and is pushing this regardless of big push back
