Enough time has passed where Riggs kid and Murtaugh's grandkid would be old enough to be rookie cops....
tv show is good enough with Damon and Riggs 2.0
but if they really wanted to do it, just make it about their kids. Murtaugh is retired and his son is now on the force and maybe Riggs daughter is the new psychiatrist. Riggs quit the force when Murtaugh retired and gets brought back into the action somehow

So Hollywood has forgiven Mel then?how would they make this work with riggs and murtaugh well past retirement age though?

Deadline hears that Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Richard Donner are all huddling on the possibility of doing another film for the the Lethal Weapon franchise. In the scenario we’ve heard Donner would direct and Channing Gibson (Lethal Weapon 4) would script. There are many moving parts, but we’ve heard that all are on board and exploring another film. It would move forward, of course, at Warner Bros., the studio that has brought audiences four in the franchise. The buddy action comedy was a major hit for the studio under the Bob Daly, Terry Semel regime when it first launched in 1987 and together the four have pulled in $955.2M worldwide. The last one was released in 1998. The film also spawned a TV series as well.

I'd still watch. Nick is vet on the force, Riggs kid is on the force...Butters is captain. Something happens to pull Murtaugh & Riggs back into the fold, with their family. Hell, have the save Leo again.
