'The Fall Guy' Falls Shy: Weekend Box Office Results (May 3-5)
The Fall Guy is here to kick off summer at the movies. Unfortunately, he took a little tumble to the tune of a disappointing $28.5M. I don't think Universal was expecting that return on a $125 million dollar budgeted action flick. That budget is Summer Blockbuster but that opening is reserved for "I'll catch it at Blockbuster."
This opening is actually worse than Bullet Train, David Leitch's 2022 action flick that released in August and did $30M. Similar openings but that movie had 59-year old Brad Pitt and was made on a restrained, by comparison, $85.9M budget. The Fall Guy has yolked-up, 43-year old Ryan Gosling coming off of Barbie.
Maybe it'll have great legs, though. With an A- CinemaScore, word of mouth could help bring more people to the movies to see it this summer.Maybe Universal should have tried to get Tom Cruise for the lead role. He was literally born to play this part as a stuntman. Plus, he would have had perfect chemistry with Emily Blunt since he worked with her in Edge of Tomorrow; this could have been a spiritual successor of sorts. What coulda / shoulda been.
While The Fall Guy disappointed, Sky Guy surprised. That's right, Star Wars: Episode l - The Phantom Menace, celebrating its 25th anniversary, took 2nd place with $8M. It was Star Wars day, yesterday, so it makes sense Episode l would perform well, but to take 2nd place?
We'll see what the best prequel, Revenge of the Sith, does next year when it's inevitably re-released for its 20th anniversary.
Zendaya's Challengers couldn't beat the worst Star Wars prequel but it did enough to take third place with $7.6M. It's made just shy of $30M: $29.4M.
Sony's new horror flick, Tarot, debuted in the fourth spot with $6.5M. Jeremy Jahns gave this a "
" review and moviegoers gave it a C-. That being said, it's a better opening than Immaculate's $5.3M. That's where the positives stop - it opened worse than Imaginary ($9.9M) The First Omen ($8.3M) and Abigail's $10.2M.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire closed out the top five with $4.5M in its 6th weekend. With a $546.8M running global total, it's overtaken Godzilla's $529M finish to become the second highest grossing film in the MonsterVerse. Kong: Skull Island's $561M is the only one in its way. Domestically, its $188M is only outdone by Godzilla's $200.6M. Can The New Empire get there?
Notables
Already the 2nd biggest entry, domestically, in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4, with $520M worldwide, is inches away from overtaking KFP3's $520.1M.
Abigail is up past $20M with $22.7M after 17 days. That's 4.6% ahead of Monkey Man's $21.7M pace, Universal's other recent release. Abigail should be available on premium on-demand tomorrow.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare fell to 11th place with $1.6M. It's totaled $18.4M this far.
Dune: Part Two made another $785K. It's running total is now $281.3M.
A24's I Saw the TV Glow made $116K from 4 theaters.
