A lot of people don't know that Martin Luther King Jr. used to watch Star Trek religiously with his wife and kids, because it was one of the only shows on tv to portray Black people in powerful positions in a world where racism was a thing of the past.

Yep.

Wasn't it MLK who told Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because her presence being a black woman with power at the time was unprecedented, and it gave black children and young women something to strive forward.

And it worked... Mae Jemison (first black female astronaut) owed her success to wanting to be like Lt. Uhura. (that is why representation is important people!!!)
