Was told I needed microfracture surgery back in the early 2000's. Years of soccer and some basketball was the cause. Skipped the surgery though as I had heard it was quite painful and I wasn't pursuing a career playing sports. Now I'm 40 years old and my knees struggle. Hard for me to squat down and getting up off the floor can be painful. I have wondered what would they feel like if I had gotten. Just got back into playing indoor soccer and I feel some discomfort and the knees have no explosiveness, but that also could be my age and not related to needing surgery. I just use CBD before playing and I'm able to get around.
Apparently microfracture works really well and improves quality of life for 'regular' people but doesn't really work well for world class athletes. If those days are behind you it might still be a good option.

It's a bit misleading to say microfracture ended their career
What ended their career was what was causing them to have microfracture surgery in the first place. It's a surgery used to replace missing cartilage in the knee. So they were going to be fukked regardless.
Did the surgery speed things up in terms of ending their career? Honestly kind of impossible to know
This is basically what Lonzo is dealing with rn. He had missing cartilage in his knee and has been out 2+ years. They had to do some experimental shyt cause they don't perform micro fracture on athletes anymore and they're not sure that shyt is even gonna work.

this was my takeaway
it was the best thing that they had at the time, the alternative was your career being over the day of the injury :yeshrug:
