Y'all debating Eminem being a pop star?

Am I in the fukking twilight zone?

Billboard literally just named this nikka the 12th greatest popstar of all-time. In what universe is this nikka not a pop star? By what metric?

Did he make pop-comemrcialized music? Check
Did he do music with other pop acts? Check
Did he sell a bunch of records? Check
Did he appear in a bunch of mainstream magazines, TV shows? Check

Just because he could rap well and showed respect to the pioneers doesn't make him any less a pop star. Be fukking for real. There was a time he was literally the biggest musician in the US.
I think with "Em sold pop star numbers but he never acted like it" he's trying to say that Eminem never carried or presented himself like some "I'm a big pop star, look at me, I'm the shh!t" like Drake and mostly all the other ones do/did type of dude. Popularity/numbers wise he's the biggest pop star rap's ever had...but he's always acted/looked like pretty much an underground, regular dope rapper who loves and represents Rap and Lyricism. A big chunk of his time as one of the hottest artists ever he was teeing off on pop stars left and right...a lot of times for no real reason other than them being pop, lol.

He did seem to get super duper gangsta out of nowhere when 50 came aboard tho, lol. Before that he was pulling empty guns and dissing Moby.

I'd always figured the reason he was dissing the pop stars was out of the frustration of being lumped in with them. He had his little poppy singles for mtv that the label wanted, sure, but the rest of his albums were straight up hip hop. And he's always shown an appreciation for the pioneers and the artists who came before him. I don't think he ever wanted to be considered a pop star, he wanted the MC respect.
But that's just my read on it :manny:

That's always what it was, to create seperation between him and the boy/girl groups. The label tasked him with riding the fence and he did well with it, but he goes out of his way to keep lyrics and homage to the culture at the forefront.

Kendrick, who really just wanted to be an undeground MC is doing the same thing in this era, riding the fence, even as the "pop star of the year". He's pop by default due to how wide (and white) his fanbase is.

Apparently, a lot of tracks leaked, including the original version of "Antichrist" from 2005. That song has the "Renaissance" verse as the first verse. It makes me wonder how much of Death of Slim Shady was Eminem reusing his old work.

I see why he left it in the vault. Only good thing about it was prime Em sucking off Pac and Biggie, a blow to the cac's agenda.
