Artists are actually selling less in streaming era compared to the cd era.I’m confident it’ll stay that way. I’ve always said in order to pass a certain threshold sales wise you simply have to reach multiple demographics
For all the streaming & hype of today’s artist I simply don’t see a female rapper hitting that kind of sales mark without male fans. The reason Lauryn got that mark was it was the female bible, honkeys liked it and men respected & enjoyed her music
Never Again
She's an emcee, but would this be considered a rap album? She walked away with a lot of hardware on her Grammy night, and those aren't all hop hop category awards.
I still don't think anyone realizes how huge this is. Lauryn Hill broke through all kinds of barriers and cracked ceilings to get where she was at. Think about it, how many Black women who were both dark skinned and rocked dreads were winning Grammys over Madonna, setting first week sales records, and ultimately going diamond. Lauryn was covering Time and Rollingstone magazine dead smack in the Pop star explosion. She didn't look like or carry herself like the typical Pop star. Lauryn sang and rapped in an era where the biggest female rappers didn't look nor sound like her.
She also stood out in Hip Hop during a year where quality Hip Hop was dropping weekly. This was the year that Pun and X dropped debuts. Jay Z had his commercial breakthrough. Kast went to another level commercially, critically, and artistically. No Limit was a juggernaut. CMR broke through.
Last, the news of Lauryn going diamond should also include the news of The Score going 7X platinum.

She could’ve had multiple diamond albums
