:what: MY Grandfather had 3 wives. Other people had family that multiple wives as well. I agree that it's less commonly practiced now due to western influence.

Are you African? Where are you getting your information from?

Was your grandfather Muslim? If not, then what specific tradition does/did he follow which allows it?

I get my info from Cheikh Anta Diop. Posted in a thread about this topic some time ago. He argues that polygamy was rarely practiced and only gained more widespread acceptance after the Islamic Conquests across the continent and proved it by various streams of evidence: pottery, religious traditions, iconography, artwork, etc. So, even if you have an ancestor that practiced it, that does not mean the whole continent or even a significant proportion of his peers viewed it as 'normal' or desirable.......just legal.

No, it wouldn't solve anything and the vast majority of our ancestors weren't living like that at all. Monogamy was the rule, polygamy was an outlier in extreme circumstances that haven't existed for a couple thousand years.

:snooze:
My Grandfather was polygamous and had a large farm compound with homes for all his wives and their children. When I was growing up it was actually pretty common I dunno bout thousands of years breh :russ:

matter fact it's back to being legal in Kenya. It was only made illegal by Eurocac colonials because it wasn't their culture.

not accurate or representative of even a fraction of Africa. things change from tribe to tribe so the diverse type of unions people had could not be attributed to Islam which had no penetration outside the coast in my country

Akon is worth 8 figures and is taking care of his 10 wives.
my grandfather wasn't worth that and did it.

y'all still think its purely about status. NOPE.

His mentality and how he does it is not tied to flaunting money for affection. This is tradition....

this website was obsessed with a shady character named Natureboy who was broke as fukk and had a stable of women. He didn't have 10 figures... It's not always about money..

I would have to see multiple, independent citations attesting to the widespread practice of polygamy, historically, before the Conquests, to be amenable to the idea.
