Honestly...these films just aren't funny and even their target demographic (humor-impaired caucasians) are starting to realize this.
Combine that with comedy in general falling victim to San Angeles becoming reality, and it's just a bad time to be funny.

Man most comedies are trash. The writing and comedians arent there.
Looking at this list of highest grossing comedies
Ive only fully seen 3 last one being Ted in 2012. The rest of them were either bad and not funny (22 jump st and rich asians) or looked uninteresting to begin with (everything else)

not reading the article, there's just no reason to see anything but spectale movies on the big screen. some people say they like to see comedies with a packed house, but if the movie is truly funny, a bunch of people overlaughing ruins the movie. also, there are like 2 genuinely non-retread joked up movies made a year. Thor Ragnarok was funnier than basically every comedy that came out that year.
Yep and with this generation being too sensitive expect more of this.

i was googling this topic a few months ago, it's definitely a few things such as going to the theater only being worth it for action, sci-fi, family and other spectacle/big special EFX movies, comedy being baked into so many other types of movies - the comedic hero/action movies, comedic dramas - as well as TV, but one other point that got brought up was how so many comedians are often part of the super PC, SJW coalition.
they're part of the crowd that's fake outraged at everything and have thus taken so many topics off the board for humor that they're stuck with nothing but bathroom humor and/or sex and drug jokes/gags - not even fat jokes are ok anymore...i just read some think piece tearing into avengers for jokes about
