MR. Conclusion
All Star
Did you even read what I wrote before the article?
Yes. It's the one millionth article written by "people in the know" about how a big time player all of a suddenly has ties, connections, interests, and other compelling reasons why they may be looking to join the New York Knicks. And it's all bullshyt. And you should know better.
We just this play out less than two weeks ago with Butler. The Knicks held firm and remain committed to their stance that they were not going to make any big time moves this year. All of a sudden Butler's talking about oh he really loved the Clippers or now he wants the Heat. Again more bullshyt.
These players and their agents are using the Knicks as leverage (via leaked "reports") in order to affect a contract negotiation. My guess is in Durant's case it's about getting the freedom and flexibility of a two-year contract with the second year being a player option versus the Warriors being able to sign him up for 4/5 years and having him locked into a fixed pay schedule. That extra flexibility gives Durant a little more power when it comes to roster decisions and ultimately satisfying the player's ego of being catered to at all times. Also the ability to opt out quicker allows Durant to take advantage of the higher pay rates as the salary cap increases on what looks like a yearly basis.
My guess is Durant's agent is most likely creating leverage by floating the stories of the Knicks being a potential destination in order to help convince the Warriors that maybe they should just go ahead and include that player option deal.
