Largest Study of Its Kind Finds Face Masks Reduce COVID-19

Wearing face masks, particularly surgical masks, is truly effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in community settings, finds a new study led by researchers from Yale University, Stanford Medical School, the University of California, Berkeley, and the nonprofit Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). The study, which was carried out among more than 340,000 adults living in 600 rural communities in Bangladesh, is the first randomized trial to examine the effectiveness of face masks at reducing COVID-19 in a real-world setting, where mask use may be imperfect and inconsistent.

The results show that increased mask-wearing -- the result of a community-level mask distribution and in-person promotion campaign -- led to a significant reduction in the percentage of people with COVID-19, based on symptom reporting and SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing. The team tested both cloth and surgical masks and found especially strong evidence that surgical masks are effective in preventing COVID-19. In the study, surgical masks prevented one in three symptomatic infections among community members 60 years and older. The findings come at a crucial time in the U.S., when many in-person events have resumed and children -- including those who are under 12 and do not yet qualify for vaccination -- are returning to in-person school.

this is just bullshyt at this point

do correctly worn N95s prevent the virus? yeah, absolutely. but america's not wearing N95s. we're wearing half ass cloth masks hanging off our face, so we can virtue signal and pretend we're addressing the real issue

the vaccine works, not mask mandates

Kids under 12 can't get the shot yet.

And wearing a cloth mask over your face and nose is better than nothing. But yes, N95 or KN95 FFP2s are the best ones to get.

.
but what point are you trying to make here? not trying to troll, im really asking

because kids under 12 won't be approved until 2022, then we have to physically roll it out, but half of these fukking MAGA parents will refuse to put this shot in their kid, who have a 99.9 percent survival rate anyway

so are you talking 2023? 2024? im sorry, but i cannot go along with that, and i refuse to be labelled a bad person for not going along with it :dead:

or tell me the date you're proposing. after 18 months its a fair question

At our current pace, 70% of the US adult population will be fully vaccinated by January.

Now with kids, its going to be tricky but I can see where once the FDA clears it for children under 12, school districts will mandate the vaccine immediately just as they do for polio, small pox, etc, etc. No idea how fast that will happen but I imagine that the 2022-23 school year, kids will have to get the vax before then.

In terms of your frustration with mask mandates... the CDC shouldn't have done what they did on masks in the first place especially when India was getting smoked with Delta.

I think there'll be mask mandates until we can get back to where we were 2-3 months ago. Nationwide only had 10,000-15,000 cases a day with low death numbers.

Right now, we're exceeding the January peak. And getting back up to 2,000 people nationwide dying a day. It's insane.

i used to laugh at those "muh freedoms" rednecks, but it turns out they were right. this is fukking insane. im fully vaccinated; the government needs to leave me the hell alone. and if it takes voting straight republican locally, then that's what i'll do. and i wont be alone
The “muh freedom” crowd also rejects the vaccine. Are they also right about that?

You wanna vote Republican straight ticket to not wear mask anymore but what’s their plan to stop cases? Hospitalizations? Deaths?

It’s one thing to vote for someone that has a plan. It’s another to just vote for someone because you don’t want to do something.

this is word salad :yeshrug: with all due respect, i asked you a question and you danced on it. didnt come close to answering, because the answer is embarrassing and you're ashamed to say it

which is perfectly fine. just dont be surprised when america rejects the party of self imposed endless mask mandates

the end game was supposed to be the point where everyone could walk up to the counter at CVS and get a shot. we hit that in May

lockdowns past that are a death sentence for liberals. but go ahead i guess :yeshrug:

It’s not word salad.

The issue is the Delta variant being more infectious. It fukked everything up.

If we were only dealing with the original Covid or the other variants, we’d be nearly done with the pandemic and just at the endemic stage.

We need way more people vaccinated so that the damage from this thing isn’t where it’s at now. As it stands we are going to have places mandate masks until case loads get back below 15,000 a day and the ICUs aren’t filled.

No one is locking down anything in the US.
