If I remeber correctly, it's the only planet that we can actually get to and I think there was signs of water in the past.I'm basing this off my 8yr son's science project I did with him not too long ago..lol

That shyt was overly dramatic.
They went from parachute to shield ejection to horizontal boosters, to a FUKIN SKY CRANE ( I would have personally gone with another retractable parachute, but then i'm not a rocket scientist so i'm sure there's a reason).
Never the less i'd hate to be the guy who forgot to carry the 1 on one of the math calculations.

it used to have an atmosphere, maybe much like earths, but its core is "dead" and so the atmosphere escaped into space with the electromagnetic field created by the molten iron core no longer being present
there are signs that there used to be running water all over the planet. Could've been life there now or in the past.
guys at my highschool landed rovers on far off planets everyday. it was no big deal
