JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Attorneys representing a Jacksonville rapper accused of murder want the state prosecutor removed from the case.

The attorneys for Hakeem Robinson — known as rapper Ksoo — recently filed a motion to disqualify the State Attorney’s Office. The motion accuses the state of targeting rappers who they say artistically sing about a lifestyle they may or may not be living.

Robinson is currently in jail on two separate second-degree murder charges. He’s charged in the 2019 shooting death of 16-year-old Adrian Gainer and the 2020 shooting death of Charles McCormick.

Robinson is known for his controversial music videos that feature lyrics about the murders. His attorneys said the lyrics do not prove he is guilty.

Robinson’s attorneys believe the State Attorney’s Office enlists people who are facing jail time to testify against suspects in exchange for a lesser sentence. The motion references a conversation between a state prosecutor and a witness who agreed to testify against murder suspect Deontrae Thomas during his 2020 trial.

Robinson’s attorneys say the witness was not in jail, but was facing a sentence for a different crime. They said the witness recorded the conversation with the prosecutor on his cell phone. The motion claims the prosecutor told the witness what to say on the stand.

PROSECUTOR: (Unintelligible) but you know how the courtroom is setup. You know I’ll be standing at the podium in front of you. You know where my tables at; you know the other table. And, the way the courtroom is setup you’ll have defense counsel at the other table and typically their client, alright. Alright?

WITNESS: So which side is he gonna be on?

PROSECUTOR: When you’re sitting at the witness stand the way the courtroom is setup looking straight ahead will be at the podium. I’ll be standing at the podium. This is my table, alright, the other table up here is gonna be, ah, defense attorneys table. Okay?

WITNESS: Is there a restroom anywhere over here?

PROSECUTOR: Yea, so, do you think you’ll be able to (unintelligible) and you’ll have to take that out of your ear when you go in there. Remember him, right?

WITNESS: Oh, yea that’s the (unintelligible) that’s the lawyer (unintelligible).

PROSECUTOR: Alright, remember (several seconds of unintelligible whispering).

WITNESS: Yea.

PROSECUTOR: And um, when you’re walking in (unintelligible) and we’ll see, alright, and so what I’ll ask you, what, if you have any issues when I get up and say, “who were you talking to” you say, “Deontrae Thomas” you’ll say, he’s sitting right over there if you recognize him. Okay?

WITNESS: Okay. Um.

PROSECUTOR: Yea, if you come up here to this corner right here, see where all those people are in the corner?

WITNESS: Uh-huh.

PROSECUTOR: Make a right right there there’s a men’s room right (unintelligible).

WITNESS: Okay.

WITNESS: S**t them crazy, I’m fittin’ to tell, I’m come and holla at you.

Once the witness took the stand, the motion said he asked to be excused from testifying. The witness never received his leniency, according to Robinson’s attorneys.

The same prosecutor, Assistant State Attorney Joel Cooper, is on Robinson’s case.

Robinson’s attorneys said his two separate murder charges stem from a witness named Dominque Barner. Barner is also charged in Charles McCormick’s murder, along with another murder and a home invasion robbery.

Robinson’s attorneys feel witnesses facing time have no credibility because they will do anything to cooperate to receive a lesser sentence.

State Attorney Melissa Nelson sent News4Jax a statement:

“This tactic appears to be par for the course for these lawyers. Assistant State Attorney Joel Cooper will continue to ethically represent the State of Florida as he has always done throughout his career. We will continue to try this case where it belongs — in a court of law.”

At this time, it’s unclear if the judge will hold a hearing on the motion to remove the prosecutor.

Jacksonville rapper Ksoo could be released from jail as judge considers reduction of bond
A bond reduction hearing is set for Friday for Jacksonville rapper Hakeem Robinson, aka Ksoo. He's accused of killing two people in alleged gang-related shootings.
Jacksonville rapper accused of killing two people.

Hakeem Robinson, 23, also known as Ksoo, will be back before Circuit Court Judge Tatiana Salvador on Friday for a hearing to reduce his $3 million bond.

Robinson has been in Duval County jail since September 2020 after being charged with murder in a Jan. 15, 2020 shooting. Police say he shot Charles McCormick, 23, to death. The up-and-coming rapper called Lilbuck was killed at the Dames Pointe Plaza, 7001 Merrill Road.

Robinson's attorneys are arguing that based on his financial status, a $3 million bond is "tantamount to no bond."

After his arrest, a record company testified that it was going to help Robinson bond out of jail. His attorneys say he doesn't have that resource anymore.

"He had the backing of a record company and that's no longer the situation," attorney Tara Kawass told Judge Salvador on Monday. "I'm asking the court to do an evaluation based on what's happening with his current financial situation."

While he was in jail, Robinson caught another murder charge. This one occurred on Feb. 25, 2019. That's when Jacksonville police say Robinson shot and killed 16-year-old Adrian Gainer Jr., also known as Bibby, at the Hilltop Village Apartments on West 45th Street.

A bond has not been set for Robinson in that case. During a hearing two weeks ago, Robinson's attorney argued that their client should be eligible for an adversary preliminary hearing. In these cases, the defendant is entitled to an adversary preliminary hearing - prior to the filing of the information - or the defendant is to be entitled to release on his own recognizance - after the filing of the information.

Judge Salvador said she'll be ruling on the adversary preliminary hearing motion this week.

How does his lawyer doing all this help his case ?

I don’t think trolling law enforcement is an effective legal strategy

By posting it publically they're currying favor of the highly impressionable public at large. Law enforcement/judicial district already think he's guilty so making them really mad isn't going to change too much in my opinion.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — (The video above is from a previous report)

*A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Robinson's father was indicted.

Hakeem Robinson, also known by the rap name Ksoo, has been indicted for first degree murder in the deaths of Adrian Gainer and Charles McCormick.

Robinson is accused of killing both men in separate gang-related shootings. Police say he killed Gainer, aka Bibby, in February 2019 and Charles, aka Lil Buck, in January 2020.

His brother, Abdul Robinson Jr., has also been indicted for first degree murder.

Robinson's father, Abdul Robinson Sr., is being charged as an accessory after the fact.

Robinson has been in Duval County jail since September of 2020. He was initially charged with murder in a January shooting. Police allege he shot McCormick to death at the Dames Pointe Plaza on Merrill Road.

After he was arrested, a record company came forward to offer help bonding Robinson out of jail.

While he was still in jail, the rapper was hit with another murder charge for a February killing. Police say Robinson shot and killed Gainer Hilltop Village Apartments on West 45th Street.

On Friday, just four days before the indictment, CEO of Cinematic Music Group Jonny Shipes told a Duval County judge he wanted to post bond for Robinson.

Both of men will have to return to court to receive a new arraignment before a judge.

yikes, his brother too? got his dad involved as well? talk about a family affair
Yeah his bond may have been possibly getting lowered and he could’ve gotten out cause Johnny Shipes, CEO of Cinematic testified in a hearing said he was going to cover his bail for the 2nd murder charge like he did the first.

After he said that, they upgraded to first degree.
