Critics Consensus: Krampus is gory good fun for fans of non-traditional holiday horror with a fondness for Joe Dante's B- movie classics, even if it doesn't have quite the savage bite its concept calls for.
This movie was really surprisingly well done and dark as fukk. Really great characters and character development, acting, lots of dark humor, realistic dialogue, a solid plot that made sense, and more suspense with payoffs than most new horror movies. Towards the middle it got a little goofy, but it never deteriorated to the point where it lost its edge. There was lots of nervous laughter in my theatre, which I think the director/writers were aiming for. The lead little boy in particular sold his role and brought some credibility to the story.
I'd say this is one of the best made mainstream horror films to come out in the last few years.
I thought they pulled the okie doke on us at the end with the "it was all a dream" scenario, but the joke really was on the family (andthe audience). A very smooth twist and satisfyingly dark as hell, just like it should have been.
It tried to be a Joe Dante "Gremlins" style fantasy/horror/comedy type movie but didn't have the requisite bite or wit to it.
I do give it props for delivering a very satisfyingly bleak ending.
