I grew up in a football household. It reigned supreme over my childhood. But we were a sports family. My dad was a Laker season ticket holder. Went to tons of NBA games. Went to the Bulls/Suns finals etc. All that basketball and I never had interest in playing until 1996.
I had two Starter jackets. The Lakers that my dad got me and the Hornets that my grandmother got me because the logo looked like a cartoon. I was in 5th grade when Kobe got drafted. I grew up a Lakers fan and I only paid attention to Charlotte because I had gotten the jacket and liked Larry Johnson. When he got drafted to the Hornets I thought, I'll just follow him and Iverson. Then he got traded to the Lakers and I thought, "perfect".
I'd been watching basketball my whole life but I didn't care to play it because I had football. But when Kobe got drafted, he made me WANT to play basketball. He made it look fun. I started learning to play that summer. I don't have any special memories about him but he was my favorite sports icon because he was the first one I chose all on my own. I got Deion and Magic from my dad. Penny and Favre from my brother. But Kobe...Kobe and Moss were the guys I chose myself to grow up with from the start.
Thank you Bean.
