Todderick Hunt: Kareem, what was your thought process behind visiting Michigan and was it an official or unofficial visit? And how did you like it, what did you do?
Kareem Walker: It was official. The process is that I’m making a decision that can impact the rest of my life, so I need to be 1,000 percent on making the right choices. Michigan is a great school, football tradition and I know a couple players there. They’ve recruited me under the old staff and new staff. I went out there on an unofficial with Coach Murray in the summer of 2014 and liked it, but then they had a staff change so I needed to see it again and see what it was like. The visit was good. I got to meet the new coaches and see a couple of friends I haven’t seen in a while. Basically, we went to the game, saw the school, talked to coaches and academic people and hung out with the players.
TH: What other schools will you take official visits to and on what dates?
KW: I’m going to visit Alabama, Mississippi, Arizona State and Ohio State, but I'm unsure of exact dates, right now.
TH: How does Ohio State feel about you taking visits?
KW: Coach (Urban) Meyer and coach (Tony) Alford, the running backs coach, knew from the start I was taking all of my visits. Coach Meyer doesn’t have an issue with it. He’s confident these trips will confirm my wanting to attend Ohio State.
Todderick Hunt: How does Kareem feel about Ohio State, right now?
Brian Murray: He loves OSU and coach Meyer and coach Alford. They’ve been great with Kareem throughout this process. Obviously, I think they would be even happier if he wasn’t taking visits, but Coach Meyer said in the past that he thinks recruits should be able to take their visits and if the school they gave the verbal to is confident in their own program and recruiting process, they should have nothing to worry about.
The process is so sped up for these kids they don’t have a chance to see all these places and truly compare them. This isn’t a one recruit issue thing, this is an NCAA issue. They need to allow for earlier official visits and signings. By doing so, it will eliminate all the babysitting these guys have to do and re-recruiting etc., not to mention it takes a lot off the plate of the student athlete, their family and coaches. I’m managing hundreds of emails, texts, calls everyday in addition to work and coaching. Then add in the media folks. It’s insane for these kids. It's overwhelming.
TH: Ohio State appears to continue to recruit running backs. Has that played into Kareem's decision to visit other schools?
BM: Not at all. When we start the recruiting process with all of our players as freshmen, we tell them and their families this is a business process. The colleges are always going to be looking for a better player, a backup recruit if they don’t get their top 1-2 guys at a position. There is going to be competition at every college at every position. Every player on the roster was the best player on their high school team. If you’re afraid of competing for a job then football isn’t for you.
TH: Do you expect Kareem to flip or to stick with OSU?
BM: I expect all of my players to make the decision that is best for them and their families. Right now, Ohio State is the place they believe is best for him. These trips will further solidify that or change it. The thing we do is bring the players and families in after the trips are made and make a pros and cons list on each school, based on what they tell us they experienced, what we know from past experiences and what the college is conveying to us.
We don’t decide for them, we map it out, give our thoughts and let the families discuss and figure out the best scenario for them. Trust me when I tell you every high school coach in the country would like it if their players picked a school, shut down the process and just focused on academics and the team.
