Cacs wanna keep ignoring history. Democrats were initially the southern party, that is true. Lincoln, a republican, freed the slaves and overall the republican party was supportive of the black man. Let's not forget that the act of freeing the slaves, suspending habeas corpus, and expanding the executive branch to near dictator power levels are not generally viewed as conservative things. That's because Lincoln was not a "conservative" by its modern definition. Republicans were more "progressive" at the time. So when you hear people bragging about who was or wasn't a republican/democrat 150+ years ago you should ignore them. They're bullshytting.

The black vote has changed a few times. To understand how democrats won the black vote you have to look at the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. At the time the black vote was still republican, and in the south the flood was a major issue for blacks. Herbert Hoover was in charge of a group that was addressing the flood (similar to today's FEMA). He promised the black community that he would swiftly address the issue, and also asked for their votes. He won the 1928 election with strong black support. However he broke his promises to the black community after winning; refugee camps were being attacked, burned, women were being raped, etc and he didn't do shyt.

In 1932 the black vote shifted to democrats. FDR beat Hoover, and despite his indifference to blacks they loved him, and especially loved his wife (who was an early civil rights fighter).

Fast forward to 1963. JFK had won the black vote in 1960 and promised a variety of things; he died before he could achieve much, but it should also be noted he was not very gung ho about civil rights behind the scene. LBJ got the CRA passed, and lamented that in doing so he killed the democrat party in the south. Over the next decades, southern democrats switched parties and became republicans - that's a historical fact.

It's no coincidence that the few southern democrats left have been wiped out since Obama became president. Race is still the dominating factor down there.
