Redskins teammates reportedly prefer Colt McCoy over Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins is making $19.95 million on his franchise-tag contract this season, but he's not playing up to it through the first two weeks.
The Redskins are staring at an 0-2 start, and Cousins has one touchdown to three interceptions in two games. His quarterback rating (78.5) ranks 27th out of the 32 teams, so there's definitely room for improvement. His poor play has now drawn the ire of his teammates, according to ProFootballTalk, which cited an unidentified source.
Cousins' "lack of decisiveness, erratic play, and confusion" has offensive players upset, per the report. When asked if the players would prefer backup Colt McCoy, the source told PFT, "At least he’d play with poise."
While the players are hiding behind a mask of anonymity, Washington's coach was a little more vocal. At halftime of Sunday's game, he told sideline reporter Pam Oliver, “You know who needs to step up? Our quarterback.”
Gruden did add after the game you "can't put it all on Kirk," but it's clear he's frustrated with his play so far. The question is, if Cousins continues to struggle, would Washington really go to McCoy? The backup quarterback has only four starts since 2011 and hasn't been that promising in his limited playing time.
At least Cousins has shown promise, like his 4,166-yard performance last year. There's also some positive takeaways from his two games this year, like his 65.2 completion percentage, 11th-best in the league. He's also third in passing yards, so things could be a lot worse.
