Yeah he used to rub me the wrong way too until I peeped
some of the other white boys on that board that were undercover racists who thought that their backpacker rap albums gave them the authority to speak about shyt they had no business speaking on. I started to give kingpin respect after that.
People need to understand that this was like 1998-1999 or some shyt like that...
That is definitely true. I can't lie, I got caught up in that whole late 90's backpacker movement for a minute. I think it was the natural progression for some kids who came up listening to Rakim, G Rap, Kane, etc. and later on Nas, Wu, Common, Ras Kass, etc. and had just recently got internet access. Some of my friends who were also "purists" and used to rap themselves were also that way.
But I soon realized that a lot of these white backpacker types were really former whiggers who were passive aggressively racist due to their shame and lack of acceptance. When I peeped how some of them were dissing Illmatic and other struggle/real life music because it wasn't "complex" enough, began to realize this is not for me.
I do respect Kingpin for keeping it real. Dudes tried to put him on to shyt like Anticon and he was like "I don't wanna hear that bullshyt."
He had no delusions about who he was. He knew he was an ex-whigger who grew up around a lot of black people and probably got picked on a lot and he just liked west coast gangsta rap. He just listened to his Daz and Kurupt CDs and didn't try to be some hip-hop authority or contributor.
