I honestly haven't finished a KH game since Birth By Sleep so I'm a little lost. Huge fan of the series but as I got older I didn't have the motivation to play all these iterations over like 4 different systems

Yea i understand. The handiling of this series post KH2 has been absolutely horrible. But people think the series hasn't moved pass KH2 and it did. Plus with the recent remixes the entire series is now on one system so this is the perfect time to get back in.
If BBS was your last KH game your only missing one "Core" game which is Dream Drop Distance. DDD is the bridge between KH2/KH3. DDD is also part of 2.8 and is the only game in the series so far that runs at 60fps(It looks absolutely beautiful)
2.8 also has 0.2 which reveals what happens to Aqua after the final episode of BBS. It's only 3 hours long but it does answer tons of questions. Some which has been 12 yrs in the making.
0.2 was originally the prologue of KH3(Think Roxas story at the beginning of KH2) But was cut off to it's own thing because KH3 was getting way to big. So we actually get a feel of what a next gen KH game looks and plays like and we also get story advancement at the same time.(Basically KH Ground Zero)
There's side stories such as 358/2 days Coded and Kingdom Hearts X. While they def add more backstory to the overall story they aren't really needed
358/2 days reveals Roxas/Xion life in the org and explains what made Roxas leave the org.
Coded reveals Malificent plans Post KH2 and is the first mention of the Data worlds(Which seems to be a big part of the Book of Prophecies)
KHX is a ongoing story that is the oldest point in time of the KH story. It reveals the 5 fore tellers and the Master of Masters(some heavy stuff was just revealed with Backcover but the story is still ongoing into season 2 of Unchained X and KH3)
But none of those stories are "needed" to understand where it's currently at. Only the 4 core games are absolutely needed to go into KH3 (KH1/KH2/BBS/DDD)
Speaking of KH3 there's good and bad news. The good news is KH3 is next. No more decimals. No more side stories
The bad news is there was a recent interview not even a couple days ago that says KH3(and FF7 for that matter) are still some time off which is making everyone believe we won't see the game until late 2018. However this year will be HUGE for KH3 news.
we can sit here and go back and forward all day but everyone besides you see that it will be bullshyt to bring Roxas and xion back. Nomura cant be this dumb to bring those two back.
