Alex Smith has been cleared to play following his concussion two weeks ago, a league source said today. That presumably means Smith will serve as the backup to starter Colin Kaepernick against the Saints this afternoon. There's been no word on whether No. 3 quarterback Scott Tolzien will be active for the game.

Quarterback Alex Smith is cleared to play and active for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. However, the 49ers announced that Colin Kaepernick is expected to start.
Smith missed last week's game due to a concussion. He underwent a contact simulation test on Friday. Coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson pushed blocking pads against Smith as he threw passes after practice. Smith made it through that test OK and was cleared to play.
Scott Tolzien was declared one of the 49ers seven inactive players, along with receiver A.J. Jenkins, running back LaMichael James, fullback/defensive lineman Will Tukuafu, offensive lineman Joe Looney, safety Trenton Robinson and nose tackle Ian Williams.
Veteran running back Brandon Jacobs is active for just the second time this season. He suited up for the 49ers' Oct. 18 game against the Seattle Seahawks but did not play.
For the Saints, rookie right tackle Bryce Harris makes his first NFL start in place of injured starter Zach Strief.
