Keep doing problems. Best way to study honestly.

When you get something wrong or get stuck, find the information needed and continue solving the problem.

Then do another and another.

Study skills aren't really taught in school. I didn't have a defined scientific study system until I was like 22.

When you try to tell kids how to study, and give them study strategies etc their eyes just start glazing over. They don't care.

:manny: I’m not a verbal learner unless I read the material beforehand.

Printed power points for extra class notes, rewrote the whole thing afterwards in a spiral

I’m just not a verbal learner or a computer learner. Had to spend extra $$$ for some classes because digital wasn’t for me, eventually got smart and ended up printing the chapters from books I downloaded

Edit: except for flash cards, making them online was better

Short answer is that a lot of kids aren't studying at all.

In general, Traditional methods have lost favor for new tech based methods.

And New tech is not as good.

With math, a lot of the software is set up to be recursive and gamified. The pencil and paper stuff is often "the new math".

Drill and kill is gone.

I asked my FB friends with kids if they were still teaching cursive. Apparently That's been gone for at least 20 years.

While that is happening, fine motor skills are in decline.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

Just like I'm sure that the rise of populism is unrelated to our educational decline. Totally random

Even if it was taught would kids even listen? Teachers have been complaining that kids aren’t paying attention because of smartphones in class so you think they would pay attention on how to study at home?
I think those who really wanna do better in school would.

They are allowed to google cut and paste, they don't actually learn the material and schools are good with that.

This is why you have to make sure your kids are always challenged.

I never had to study in grade school, shyt was easy. And I'll admit I didn't go to a good school at all academics wise. But it bit me in the ass when I got to college because I had no clue how to legit study. It took me 2 years to figure that shyt out.

It's not about your skills, it's about how well-connected and influential your network is.

I would have a hard time believing this, but I know a few teachers and this comports with what they tell me.

I remember in the 8th grade after most of the class had failed a history test, the old exasperated teacher told us that to “learn something all we had to do was write it down 8 times and we’d know it.”

Of course that doesn’t work for classes like math where in some cases you have to show your work, but in most cases it does. Most of the tests we take from middle school thru college are multiple choice, so she was teaching us to memorize, as opposed to actually learning the material.

Can't say I agree. But that's from experience. My boy (9th grade), my nephew (10th grade), my boys kids 8th and 10th grade...have homework pretty much everyday. And it's been that way since middle school. Kid comes home head in the books til dinner time, then back to the books. I kind of feel bad for him because he's come home more than a days went straight to his room, head in the books, told us to just leave dinner in the microwave for him, popped out at like 930 smacked it, hopped in the shower and went to bed.

Never even had to harp on him about it. And truly he should be eating with the family every night but work is work. Both my brother and my boy have said "they give too much fukking homework these days, we never had that much homework"

I can't front, I didn't have the acumen these kids have now. I was too busy playing sports and kicking it with friends. I still got my work done, that was class time and study hall was for, but shyt...idk.

people often think being smart is the key to being successful in school.

but the real trick is mastering good study habits and doing all of your assignments on time.
