Lot of industry implosions right now as the bill comes due. Major artists aren't releasing new music frequently enough to bail out labels, touring is becoming more expensive, zero artist development or finding new stars, and a lot of new rap is just failing. The bets labels like 300 made to sign a bunch of regressive Carti/Travis/etc clones hasn't worked.

If you don't have a Disney kid in the wings ready to hit a studio soon - or a bunch of stars like Interscope - you're fukked right now.

Thing is, a lot of the stars on Interscope were signed/made it under the old model of the industry. There’s very few “stars” that have been launched since 2020. Olivia Rodrigo? And she’s a pop star. Rapping wise - Yeat maybe? Maybe the definition of a “star” needs to be reevaluated in 2024 but it’s not looking good for the industry as a whole. Despite the fact that there is still really good music out.

Music is so done for record labels

Rap is trash, rnb is waste and those jay, nelly, whitney, mariah numbers are not coming in the doors anymore

On the artist side that's why it helps if you're a legend or have a catalog folks keep interest on, you can always eat off of that doing a shows and etc.

That's why I always find it funny when folks try to clown cats like Rakim or similar acts, when in the end they are winning.

They will milk a few more years by paying Latin and African artist pennies but yeah the lick is over so people are cashing out.

The Streaming platforms will probably replace the labels and Music just goes to a "YouTube" cotent creator model.

Billie Eilish comes to mind, on Interscope. Outside of Interscope SZA has certainly gone from big to a superstar over the last 1-2 years. Morgan Wallen too. Sabrina Carpenter is next up, and Chappell Roan too. There are big new artists who are superstars or poised to be, but there's just not enough big music coming out at any one time to prop this up. There is no precedent for someone like Rihanna simply not releasing music during her prime. I'm not sure there's a rap precent for Kendrick taking 5 years to release an album. There's not much precedent for Ed Shereen staying on the road and dropping some half assed albums in between that the label doesn't have time to truly craft properly.

I also think it's a problem that most of the next big stars are pop stars. There are no upcoming big rap stars. Yeat fell off. Ken Carson is on the verge but I just don't buy it, perhaps I'll be wrong who knows. None of these guys are being properly molded or prepared, and they don't even give a fukk enough to want to. I don't fukk with Travis but you know what? He takes shyt seriously. He plans albums, he plans tours. He's an artist. He's also the template for most shyt that is coming out right now, him or Carti. Yet none of these young kids are crafting albums. They don't give a fukk about touring. And in 3-5 years they'll be gone while these pop stars get bigger and bigger.

That’s kind of what I’m talking about. An artist like SZA Id consider a “star” but she released her debut mixtape in 2013-2014 and debut album 2016. She’s very much part of that “old” model in the business that was basically a blend of mixtape/blog era blending into the SoundCloud/streaming era.

Travis Scott and Carti fall under this too. Both debuted in the 2010s and crafted mixtapes and albums that garnered them large followings and legitimate fans for life. And you’re right - both of them took that shyt DEAD ass serious in climbing their way to the top as legitimate rap stars.

Billie Elish, Morgan Wallen and now Chapelle Roan are massive pop stars that came out after 2020, no doubt. But what about the black pop stars? :francis: Especially black American young pop stars? I love Tyla, Tems, Ayra Starr but they not “popstars” or American and even someone like Victoria Monet, I love her too but she’s in her 30s and been around for awhile.

I think we gonna get less and less fully crafted albums and more singles and cycling of artists from labels. I fukk wit Yeat and Ken Carson but there’s no way they carrying hip hop into the next decade. My question is - who is? It’s looking very bleak for the industry. Especially with a lot of the deviancy coming to light :hubie:

Kendrick is trying to sell borderline evangelical rap and it’s …not gonna work IMO. Kendrick would have to change his message.

Afrobeats is a touch too far for the average american because of some of the non-black-community slang/language barriers. UK rappers are finally breaking through.

Honestly, axing streaming would allow rap to thrive, ironically. Streaming is bad for RAP music cause streaming is more for playlists of “events” if you know what I mean.

Streaming is a Ponzi scheme. If you notice the price keeps going up.

And yet Kendrick's album is gonna do 400k first week at least. Let's be real. The rules don't apply to Kendrick or Cole.

Axing streaming would kill rap because there would be no money in it for labels, unless you're in the big three. The problem is that labels view rap as a short term investment for quick cash from viral hits and bullshyt. Meg puts out a video half naked, the song hits the charts and falls off after a couple weeks each time. Somebody is making money off that but it's not enough to save a label.

The best thing Drake could do long term is buy himself out his deal, take the sales hits but make all his money back and keep his creative freedom. Drake will be OK long term I think, especially if him and Wayne link up one last time.

The next Kendrick album might be the last high selling rap album ever.

Cole’s career is basically over IMO.

Big Sean shytted the bed and needs to come back ASAP.
