It's possible that they don't think they could make another run as constructed. Klay didn't look as good, Steph gets another year older, Wiggins is objectively worse than KD, you didn't play Wiseman, Moody or Kuminga basically throughout the finals run (the latter 2 got limited play but no notable moments really).

It's feasible to think that while they are good now, they still feel that they'd be better with KD. They also prevent the possibility of having to face him if he goes somewhere like Phoenix or LA and they get to make their competition weaker. So I can see the vision
