There's a thread somewhere on here talking about what's missing in hip hop in 2013..Drake's comments illustrate it perfectly. It's not about "beef" because Kendrick didn't spark beef with ANYONE he mentioned, especially since he said that he's cool with the cats he mentioned, he's talking purely from a competitive standpoint and that's what hip hop has always been. This DJ saying he's better than the other DJ, this dancer better than that dancer and this MC better than that MC..that's the way it works, like someone said, it's not a playground man, it's always been about competition, whether it's a one on one battle or just one guy making another guy feel like he needs to step his game up.
For son to really feel like dudes won't appear on Kendrick records because of it, he's showing that he doesn't get it. Pusha heard Kendrick's verse and took it as a challenge, as did most of the dudes who have spoken on it, why is he the ONE dude who has to get in his feelings and feel like it wasn't cool? The difference between then and now? It was understood that Nas wanted to be better than BIG and vice versa..it was understood that dudes in Wu wanted to outshine each other and RZA even had them battle each other for beats...It was understood that when BIG and Jay did a song, it was friendly competition that both of them loved and it wasn't a diss if someone said on a track with another MC, "I'm the best." It was a challenge. I got no problem with Drake from a skill standpoint because he's nice although his music isn't for me, but damn man, get your grown man on. Styles P was right, dudes are doing too much Kumbaya right now
