This is like diet TPAB. Has its creative attempts but the production is lackluster. Average for someone of Kendrick’s caliber. TPAB had amazing production and standout hooks. Potent verses on tracks like momma, institutionalized, blacker the Berry, uu, hood politics etc.

Can’t believe we waited 5 years for this.

And wtf is Kodak on here especially after his disrespectful at Nip, not to mention pleading guilty in rape? Being featured on a Kendrick album is such a rarity it’s so odd for him to do that. I wonder what he trying to say by doing so

Did you also not like To Pimp a Butterfly? Because that's largely just performance art in audio format outside of straight shooters like You Aint Gotta Lie, Momma, Mortal Man etc. This album ain't really that much weirder

For the record, don't nobody gotta like nothing. I love it but maybe that's the late 80s Gemini in me.

TPAB is way better from a straight spittin standpoint and clearly from a sonics/production/musical POV.

I feel like Rich spirit will end up being the smash hit on the album. He has like 4 potential hit records with N95, Rich spirit, Silent hill, and die hard.

Can also see count me out and savior gaining traction too.

He had a ton of better songs on TPAB.

Kendrick is a special artist. I'd probably put this at the bottom of his major releases, yet I'd still give it an 8.5. Who else has 4 releases this ambitious and conceptual, yet commercially successful? I really like that he went left on this album and focused more on his personal well-being and state of mind. I have a baby on the way and have worked myself to the bone during COVID. I've done a lot of therapy to deal with losing people close to me and adjusting to my new normal. I find this album to be the most relatable to my current situation even if it's less accessible and harder to just "throw on" in the background

We all know Kendrick is an amazing artist. A lot of people are feeling this album and a lot of people aren't. Its just getting mixed reviews. Why are some of yall trying to force people to sway their opinion on it. You can't hit a home run everytime. Im cool with it being a average album at best. Some high highs and low lows.

Like for many things, on both sides there are folks that can't fathom different tastes and perspectives.

It's either "you're dumb for not liking the music I like" or "you're a dikkrider for liking music I don't".

Theres a bit of an anomally with K. he has without ANY doubt a top 3 discography in hip hop history, but he is nowhere near my personal top 10. Simply don't love his style of emceeing or his voice or the beats he raps on as much as the 90's heavyweights. His consistency is unprecedented, catalog full of 8/10 tracks but would exchange his entire work over 5 songs like Nas is like, Made you look, Memory lane, NYSOM, Youre the man, Nothing lasts forever without blinking if id have to somehow. And could use the same example with my favorite tracks from BIG PAC JAY X or YE.

As an overall hip hop artist only Ye is in the discussion but K. quality control is unbeliveable.

Album is excellent, some of the critique in this thread is warranted, some of it absolutely ridiculous...

Not sure how he managed to convince Dr.Dre to only "oversee" his projects through Aftermath but thank god for that cause he lost his midas touch a while ago.
