First play finished, first listen this doesn't seem to be as multi layered as TPAB, but it's still brilliantly put together, it flows real well, features are used nicely and overall it's great on first listen, like iv said I wouldn't know where to rate it in his discography yet tho as obviously it's too early, God and Humble are probably my least favourite tracks...Humble kinda sounds out of place too, I def wouldn't say either of them are wack tho. I think He's gonna get a Ton of love for this like his others.

Off first listen.

I will say I like it. It's quite different than GKMC and TPAB. In a sense, this is likely Kendrick's Graduation. This album will fare very well with casual crowds, and I think this will make Kendrick a mega superstar. It will sell a lot. If Humble's success is any indication, the singles will do just as well.

Thematically, it's hard to pin point a specific story or trope riding throughout. It's more varied than his previous offerings. Lyrically, I don't have a clue what each song means. I usually digest Kendrick's lyrics on the third or fourth listen, typically because they're a bit more dense than other rappers and the overall message is sometimes buried.

Sonically, though, it's incredible. Hard to say it's better produced than TPAB, which was simply incredible with all the live instrumentation and different hands in it. Sounds like a more mature GKMC/Section.80 in terms of production. Kendrick ditched the pitched vocals for the most part, which was something I had hoped he would do. Just straight bars for the most part.

Great review - I agree, hard to pinpoint amongst his other projects but it's the right album he needs at this point in his career.
