Walgreens taps Starbucks operating chief Roz Brewer as its next CEO

Walgreens taps Starbucks operating chief Roz Brewer as its next CEO
Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Rosalind Brewer will replace Stefano Pessina as CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, people familiar with the matter told CNBC on Tuesday.

Starbucks announced Brewer’s departure earlier in the day, saying she is leaving at the end of February for a CEO position at an undisclosed publicly traded company.

Officials from Walgreens weren’t immediately available to comment.

If named CEO of Walgreens, Brewer would become the only Black woman leading a Fortune 500 company.

Her departure from Starbucks comes as investors, regulators and activists push for more diversity in corporate America. Nasdaq has proposed changes that would push for greater racial and gender diversity on the boards of publicly traded companies listed on its exchange.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Brewer’s decision to join Walgreens.

Walgreens shares rose nearly 8% in extended trading on the news. The stock is down 5% over the past 12 months, bringing its market value to $42.50 billion.

In her current role, Brewer deals with a wide range of responsibilities, from technology initiatives to the creation of new coffee drinks. She was widely expected to be the successor to current CEO Kevin Johnson. After she leaves, her responsibilities will be split between CMO Brady Brewer and Rossann Williams, who serves as president of company-operated locations in the U.S. and Canada.

[paste:font size="5"]numerous challenges as the company looks to turn around its business and create new revenue streams. The drugstore chain struggled in the early months of the pandemic as foot traffic dropped, particularly at its Boots stores in the United Kingdom. The company reported earlier this month that sales were picking up but reiterated its outlook for low single-digit earnings growth.

The drugstore chain has been cutting costs in some areas and investing in others. It closed hundreds of Walgreens and Boots stores last year and cut the size of its workforce.

Walgreens’ bigger rival, CVS Health, acquired health insurer Aetna and was quicker to expand in health-care services. CVS opened Minute Clinics, and Walgreens has been playing catch-up.

Brewer also sits on the board of Amazon, a company that’s been cutting into drugstore sales both in the front of the store as well as behind the pharmacy counter as more customers buy toothpaste and refill prescriptions online.

Amazon launched its own pharmacy business in November, offering perks such as a savings program and free two-day delivery to Prime members. It acquired online pharmacy PillPack in 2018.

Brewer also is chairwoman of Spelman College’s board of trustees and previously was a director at Lockheed Martin and Molson Coors Beverage.

Starbucks has also recently announced the retirement of its CFO, Pat Grismer. He will be replaced by Rachel Ruggeri, who serves as senior vice president of finance for the Americas division, starting Feb. 1.

Shares of Starbucks fell more than 1% in extended trading on Tuesday after the chain reported its fiscal first-quarter results. It beat analyst estimates for its earnings, but its sales recovery in the U.S. faltered as Covid-19 cases increased during the quarter.

She’s knew she wasn’t going to win... That was Atlanta’s last black mayor unfortunately.

Oh well :unimpressed:
What good is having a black mayor, if that mayor talks down to negroes seeking justice(the press conference w/ TI last summer), and doesn't do shyt for them?

So long good riddance to Keisha, hopefully the CBC and Letitia James follow suit. :camby:

she's cashing out, but i can see why and don't blame her. the last 4 years must have felt like at least 7. idiocy of pres chump, social unrest, police basically quit on her and the city, pandemic, economy going in the shytter, spotlight all the time, her whole fam caught covid.

that said, gentrification in atl is real. atl hasn't had a white mayor in almost 40 years, but keisha barely beat that white lady in the last election...

This is the problem you giving the leadership of the city a pass.

Walgreens has deals with Kroger where I am and carry a lot of their products. shyt I shop there more than the grocery store now cause it’s closer. I bet they doin aite

I wouldn't be so sure. I was a staff pharmacist for Walgreens for many years up until I left in 2019. There are a lot of problems from shady stock business with the former CEO and majority stock holder Stefano Pessina and his girlfriend/partner who is on the board as well, to the discrimination lawsuit they had around 2017 or 2018 and struggling front end sales in stores. Right before I left they were buying out employees paid leave if they had accrued a bunch of it which is a sign they were looking to sell.

CVS will mostly be ok because they own one of the biggest PBM's in the country in AETNA and that will have a big impact on pharmacy margins which is a huge problem right now for all pharmacies big and small.

Unless she was not returning for a second term to become CEO of Walgreens, I can't see any position that she could take that would be commiserate.

She has enough connections that she could've landed partner at an investment bank like Rahm Emmanuel, Harold Ford Jr, or Vernon Jordan.

Why Walgreens?

Basically the mayor race will boil down to Mary Norwood or Jason Carter
I doubt we'll get Reed vs Norwood pt 2

She’s still really popular (amongst black people at least) and she raised 500k during her last fundraiser so I don’t think she was completely out the race…

I’m kind of surprised she doesn’t want to put up a fight. When I first read the story an hour ago I thought it was fake when I read the Walgreen’s shyt. I was like:gucci:
Her heart wasn't in it no more. It's good she bounced instead of being blood thristy like Kasim, Bill, Shirley, and the rest of the Atlanta crooks.
