Been years since I've been around people like this but you know Durham even more of a college town than Raleigh, right? it's smaller than Raleigh and Duke has more of an influence on the culture and politics of Durham, than any college has on Raleigh's...

Durham is rough by Carolina standards, none of the big cities down here are bad by national standards. The really, really wild spots in NC are the small cities and towns like Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, Lumberton, etc. All those little places worse than any of the bigger cities...

But to answer OP, no I haven't heard anyone do this in quite awhile...
