Matrx 4 in 3D IMAX with Lawrence and Keanu returning would break records. Those saying otherwise might be lying to themselves and they know damn well they will be lining right up with the masses when it drops. Keanu fighting skills is still looking sharp after "John Wick 2" Seeing the Matrix films on the Big Screen was a Legendary experience. All they got to do is re-release the Matrix Trilogy in 3D. There's a whole generation of youth that grew up on the Matrix the same way 80's and 90's babies grew up on Star Wars and Jurassic Park. The same people saying this wouldn't work aren't understanding the dynamics of iconic legendary franchises. This is why "Jurassic World" caught so many people off guard, everyone thought no one cared because "Jurassic Part III" was so average and it had been a 14 Year "Break-Time" since the last movie. People completely overlooked the generational dynamics when it comes to Iconic Franchises who had cultural impact. That's why they couldn't see that when you have a new "Jurassic Park" movie after a decade, it was pretty much a lock to break records. Mainly because an entire generation of Kids are now are adults bringing their families to see it. Just like the new "Star Wars" movies even after the "Prequels which did well dispite some reviews" are all breaking records. The same will happen for a New Matrix movie with Current Day special effects and 3D. Sometimes I think people are forgetting just how big Matrix is Globally.
The last Matrix movie was 2003, it's been almost 15 years and plenty of "Break-Time" for people to miss the franchise. A whole generation has come up since that time. It grossed 1.6 Billion and over 3 Billion with Home Video and Merchandising. It's played all over television and cable all year around including the Holidays. It's been translated and dubbed in tons of languages. It was the first DVD to sell a million copies and it's the highest grossing R-Rated Franchise of All Time. Techically only "Revolutions" got bad reviews, "Reloaded" got very solid reviews at the time it was released and broke records. Of course the Original is Iconic. Man it could have some huge anticipation especially when that first teaser drops. This movie shouldn't go the prequel route because the "Ani-matrix" explained that perfectly. It should be a sequel and could be about the resurrection and rescue of Neo and then bring in a new Smith type bad guy that's just as strong as him. Have the Archetict change his mind on the peace deal. Have Morpheus building up a new Zion. You can still have Trinity but in Neo Dream sequences. You bring back the Big 3 just like "The Force Awakens" and everyone will be there opening night. I think this can drop in the next 3 years by 2020 which would be the 1 year after the 20th Anniversary of The Matrix. In 2019, you drop the trilogy in 3D re-release and 2020 you drop Matrix 4. Now yes the Wachoski's have been hit or miss the last decade but returning to the world of the Matrix might be the right creative boost they need. The Matrix Franchise is big enough for 3 more sequels to expand the world and mythology
