I think the worst possible situation for Kawhi would be to pretend to be hurt and sit out another year.
Going to LA after 2 years of not playing isn't ideal for Kawhi or LAL either. And I'm sure the Lakers can't just stand pat for an entire season. They will have to move on (for 2019 at least). And a lot can change in a year.

I mean both sides can play hardball here, in my opinion.

Spurs were willing to pay him the max before this trade request. His leverage to be traded would be just deciding not to play like he did this season

he was out last year because he was hurt
he can't just accept a 5 year 200 dollar contract and then say"im not playing unless u trade me"
thats unheard of, the spurs wouldn't take the bait and he would get fined heavily for that

only time a player has leverage is when hes in the last year of his contract or if he has a no trade clause
