There were 1,465 people serving life-without-parole sentences for crimes committed as juveniles (known as JLWOP) at the start of 2020
:picard: It’s seems rare as hell... what kind of crimes are we talking about?

:yeshrug:Abolish prisons.

I wonder if it would have been an acceptable ruling for HL at 5-4?:patrice:
Do lefties(or rethugs) truly wants more even court? Or just a court that rules the way they want:jbhmm:

It isn't an acceptable ruling because its loaded, fails to follow even basic rules of Court decision-making (overturning stare decisis within a couple of years is clear ideological bullshyt), and there is not difference between a 6-3 ruling and 5-4 ruling.

Thomas even notes it in his concurrence that this is essentially a gutting of Miller and Montgomery.

And people want a Court that doesn't roll back legal protections, and makes a baseline effort to fall in line with conclusions that make sense from both a scientific and a sociological basis.
Juvenile life in prison sentences do not make sense from a scientific or sociological standpoint.

fair enough... I agree life without parole for minors is :picard:

The court essentially ruled that they wanted life without parole on the table.

:wow:

The American prison system is dumb:ufdup:
Rehab > Prison

Assuming libertarian sources would be rejected outright... I found a leftist source for you.
Is Prison Necessary? Ruth Wilson Gilmore Might Change Your Mind (Published 2019)
The American Prison System is dumb and there SHOULD be more of an effort to rehab certain individuals

However, there SHOULD be prisons, because there ARE people that need to be removed from society, specifically for the crimes that they have committed, and no amount of rehab will change certain people.

But it's this lack of nuance that fukking plagues Libertarian types, because you always stop the thought process at the "chicken goes on the grill" part instead of following through to the actual cooking of the meat, which is why when you serve people your incomplete thought processes, unpleasant and uncomfortable shyt insues...a la uncooked chicken

How Would Prison Abolition Actually Work?

Big gov types are the most resistant to it, but I advice all POC to read up on it. It’s not as silly as it sounds.

...the prison industrial complex has been worse for us specifically than the military industrial complex by a mile.

I actually agree with @DEAD7 on this.
The number of prisons we “actually need” are minuscule, in comparison with the massive federal and state waste that go toward the carceral state. Proper investments in rehabilitation and prevention could cut crime by huge amounts, freeing up taxpayer money to go toward even better programs, allow economic growth by a much higher rate, and take out parts of the bloated prison-industrial complex.

What you posted doesn't sound like abolishment

Sounds like there should be LESS not "none"

I don’t think prisons should be abolished tomorrow, but it’s time for us to start imagining a world without prison. We need to create that society, instead of creating a world where prison is all over. That needs to be the goal.
