So basically, I never really listened to Nas until recently, when I kept seeing him getting worshiped as the greatest rapper to ever pick up a mic bar none. I listened to Illmatic (widely thought to be his best work), after I had seen a lot of people saying it’s the greatest hip-hop album of all time, and I was disappointed. Honestly, I really don’t see why that album is worshiped so much. Sure, it has some classic songs (NY State of Mind, Life’s A bytch and The World Is Yours), which coincidentally is the first three songs (minus The Genesis). Surely this shows that this is just another album that starts off strong, but falls off in the second half? I do think the album is GOOD but definitely not worthy of the GOAT title it is given.
After listening to Illmatic, I tried listening to his latest album, Life Is Good. Once again, I was really trying to see what was so special about this guy, and I couldn’t. (to be fair, I did only listen to Life is Good once, so this could just me being ignorant, but i Really don’t feel like listening to it again.)
Then my last try to see what was so special about him, was listening to the song ‘Ether’, considered the greatest diss of all time. It was alright, nothing really blew me away.
So after all this, I came to the conclusion that Nas is very overrated, and is not worthy of the GOAT title.
Unless there is something else that I am missing from him that I really need to listen to, I will forever stand by this.
Opinions?
