But these are record that predate the streaming era. We had to go out and buy the shyt in the store. You mean to tell me that millions of us weren't in the store buying those singles? I did.

shyt is so confusing.
During the physical CD era, I never understood people buying singles. It just makes more sense to buy the album. Just way too many CDs to have to carry around.
The digital era is basically the reverse because of the ability to hold enormous amounts of music digitally and create playlists, etc.

Pre streaming singles would only qualify for gold and platinum certifications based on the sales that were generated from the physical single released separately…back then those type of singles only did big numbers if they huge lead singles that were released before the album dropped, or a big remix that wasn’t available on the original album…Back That Azz Up was on the original pressing of 400 Degreez and by the time it was pushed as a single it was generating more interest in and sales for the album, instead of people just buying the standalone single…a big chunk of that 3X platinum is most likely digital and streaming from more recently
Figured this had to be the CD single cause ain't no damn way

I absolutely hated buying singles in the late 80s - mid 90s. They would come with 5 mixes of the main song, a b-side song, and then the dreaded "album teasers" where small parts of the songs on the album would play. But the album was $14.00 and the single would be $3-$5 dollars. Once I had some disposable income I only bought full albums from 96 til I stopped buying cds in the late 2000s. "Back Dat azz up" would most certainly have benefitted more from the streaming era than when it was released. It's still a staple at pretty much everything especially black family reunions. It would be double diamond certified if it came out today and garnered the same popularity it did in 99. The song is over 25 yrs old, but throw it on at any gathering and just see what happens.

Also have to ask yourself how many singles they shipped around that time

Sure, that song was played everywhere, but most of the people that played it were DJs or whoever owned the album depending on the environment. As a consumer I never thought of buying singles unless it had a song that wasn't on the album(or a remix)
