DC animated didn't have to be a singular universe.
...But that was the only way they could attempt beat competition(Marvel) to the punch of introducing characters (whose powersets mirror characters of the competition, for example quicksilver to flash, Dr fate/Constantine to stephen strange), to the general cinema -viewing populace first, while communicating their connection to the larger DC universe succinctly and without confusion. It's animated world building, which can be done faster than live action. A canonical guerrilla war between Marvel and DC...
