Stuff like this is probably why Hassan is improving and playing with such effort
The Miami Heat tradition of bringing back former players for the playoffs could continue this week, with Heat General Manager Andy Elisburg confirming to the Sun Sentinel that Dorell Wright is under consideration by the team for one of its final roster spots.
"I've talked to him since he's been back from China," Haslem said before Tuesday's game against the Detroit Pistons at AmericanAirlines Arena. "I would love to have Dorell back."
Because the Heat have two open roster spots under the NBA maximum of 15, they can add up to two players before next Wednesday's regular-season finale against the Boston Celtics and have those players be playoff eligible.
A developmental player added at season's end could then be retained as part of the team's offseason program, with consideration expected to go to players on the Heat's NBA Development League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Among possibilities to be added from there are forwards Greg Whittington, DeAndre Liggins and Rodney McGruder, center Keith Benson and guards Briante Weber, Toure Murry and Larry Drew. GuardJohn Lucas III, who has worked with the Heat in training camp, also has been linked to Heat interest.
“The learning never stops with me and Spo,” he said. “He always wants perfection from me. He always says I can do something better. Every day is a learning experience. That's what he's there to do. He's there to teach, make me a better player."
Whiteside on Spo pulling him out briefly for Haslem
Certainly sounds like a guy who has bought in..Wouldn't surprise me at all if the plan was to unleash him in the starting lineup in the playoffs
In the middle of the second quarter during Tuesday’s win over the Pistons, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra pulled Hassan Whiteside out of the game for a conference on the sideline. Spoelstra has done this before, and it hasn’t always produced the results he wanted. This one seemed to work, though.
While Spoelstra declined to reveal what he and Whiteside discussed, he was happy with his reaction to it.
“It was a couple teaching points I wanted to make, and the only way to make it was to take him out,” Spoelstra said. “And he made some adjustments to that. I’ll probably continue to do that because his energy was very good after that point. And he was doing some good things even before that point.”
After Whiteside went back in, Spoelstra got fired up watching him work for space in the post, not find any, then make the correct choice to kick the ball back out to the perimeter. Here’s the video:
Whiteside thoroughly enjoyed that interaction.
“I thought his suit was too tight to give a high five, but he pulled it off,” he said. “He surprised me.”
As far as their conversation earlier in the quarter, Whiteside didn’t want to get into it.
What did he tell you?
“I think he just pulled me out to get some rest. He told me a couple things he seen out there.”
What did he want you to do?
“He said just keep blocking everything.”
That’s probably not what he said.
“That is what he said.”
He said he had some teaching for you and you responded well.
“I love Spo.”
Have you grown as far as adjusting within a game?
“The learning never stops with me and Spo. He always wants perfection from me. He’s always saying I can do something better. Every day is a learning experience. That’s what he’s there to do. He’s there to teach and make me the best player I can be.”
Are you better at taking coaching now than you were your first time in the NBA?
“I wasn’t ever a bad guy to coach… I think I’ve got a better understanding of the game than I did because I’m older, I’m more mature and I understand how important it is to eat breakfast. I’m getting better — better with basketball, better with Snaps. I think y’all enjoy that.”
I got after Spo for his Whiteside treatment earlier in year, but it appears his plan has worked?
Winning helps of course
Nah. Everything changed when bosh went down. If it wasn't for that, hassan would prolly still be in the dog house. That forced spo to make hassan a focal point of the offense. Once hassan started getting the ball more he showed everybody he can do a lot more than just set screens. Bosh going down pretty much forced spo's hand in giving hassan a greater role. It was a gift and a curse I guess. hassan has proven what a lot of us here already believed. That he's our MVP and the backbone of our team. That should have been known a long time ago. But better late than never I guess. Good to see spo and hassan finally getting along though. Now spo just needs to cut the bullshyt and put him back in the starting lineup. These Eastern playoffs are gonna be no joke.I got after Spo for his Whiteside treatment earlier in year, but it appears his plan has worked?
