Btw, I agree with the frustration of people thinking it's progressive to show people of color dating white men/women. It's actually more progressive to feature characters of color dating other characters of color, and leaving white people completely out of it. That's one of the reasons I couldn't get past even the first few episodes of the Mindy Kailing show, when I realized she would only be dating white men.

I think in part it's for sure marketing and appealing to a larger segment of viewers, ostensibly white, who wouldn't really be interested in an exclusive Pakistani romance, but include a bubbly, anxious white girl, and there you go. In this specific movie it's a major part of the story, but that isn't always the case. I halfway though the movie would go for a twist, and he would end up with the much more attractive and interesting Pakistani girl....She was well dressed, sharp, sophisticated, as opposed to just ironic and hipster type lol

Yeah that's where I thought and hoped it was going as well, especially after the great scene where
the white girl rejected him. I thought it was a pretty nice subversion of romantic comedy cliches.

I didn't know this was based on a true story going in so I was slightly disappointed in how it wrapped up.

Thanks for getting what i was trying to say. This is a big reason i dont fukk with aziz ansari (i posted about it in the master of none thread).

This brave for white people to date minorities shyt is everywhere nowadays. Look at ABC with the black bachelorette - took them 25 seasons to cast one and they pat themselves on the back for it. Next thing you know they have casted openly racist contestants just to create buzz.

It's a not so subtle tactic to show that "sure we like diversity - but we better be front and center" imo. Sure there will be cultural differences and stuff but it goes on everday.

Sorry for kinda derailing the thread OP

I wanna see it, i use to listen to the him and his wife podcast.

Yeah, I used to be a big fan of The Indoor Kids.

While on one hand, I get the sentiment some feel about whites always being the object of desire but the film is based on his real life :skip:. It's not like he purposely set out to star in a romantic comedy and said get me a white girl for the lead and his wife is Pakistani in real life. His wife Emily is white.

What's interesting to me about this is it feels like interracial black white relationships in movies are about us being equal, whereas with these brown white love stories, it's more about the brown person being perceived as white.

I think with the brown/white stories, there always seems to be a mention of the guy(or girl) not finding qualities of being "Indian" or Desi as attractive. I don't even know of any examples of black dude on a TV show openly and verbally rejecting their culture in favor of "normal" women on the regular. :ohhh: . Like part of the plot. Imagine Damon Wayans Jr on one of these movies or shows saying black women are this or that and always trying to do this or that. Its also funny the way they portray the arranged marriages as being this terrible burden on the dudes, but from my experience, the parents always choose attractive women for them, and they are often sweet as can be. The ones I know have been dimes with nice personalities. The dudes also get to play the field if they got game, knowing if they just make the grades their parents will support them if they can and they get to settle down if they want. I'm not for or against this dude. This is his real life story and he seems nice enough, but these articles pointed out some real shyt :picard:. My gf pointed out way more examples. I was like cotdamn.:why:, they not even sending subliminals, they going straight for it.
